    Georgian Cottage In A Village...

What a cute house! Ancient by US standards, tho I know y'all think it's practically new.

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Unfortunately, that's not how it works. They delay the paperbacks here (in the US) sometimes for years, depending on how the hardcover is selling.

    Truman Capote

In Cold Blood is phenomenal, you should start it when you have a nice block of time to read because you won't be able to put it down. Really an amazing work. Nothing else he did measures up to it. His bio is the thing, though. His life was a kind of performance art, really.

Which song are you listening to right now?

I just bought the Garden State soundtrack. Yea!

    Desert Island books

Since I guess I'm going to be there indefinitely, I'd go for those that have the highest re-readability factor, and that provide the most meat for thought. Also, I'm going to cheat and choose compilations: Candide (or the collected works of Voltaire :D) Collected Works of Shakespeare (very...

Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You!

Back on topic . . . I am looking forward to Sideways, a nice movie about relationships and wine, and Closer, a daring one from Mike Nichols starring Julia Roberts (in a very unsympathetic role), Clive Owen, Natalie Portman, and Jude Law.

    Neil Gaiman

Good to know, thanks! I will get to Sandman someday. I still haven't picked up his short story collection either.

    Reading in November

Still on Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell, it's so good I don't want to rush thru it and leave it behind. It's hardcover and not very portable, so I also started The Fairy Godmother by Mercedes Lackey, which is as good as the rest of her stuff. I'm thinking of having a run thru Narnia, as I...

    classic coming of age

I wouldn't call it exactly coming of age, but Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen is a compelling memoir as well.

    The Strangest Film Ever

Prospero's Books. Based on the Tempest, which is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. But the movie made no sense, couldn't finish it.

    Neil Gaiman

I hear that you really need to read the Sandman ones in order tho, so if your library doesn't have a complete set you may get a wee bit frustrated. I've been meaning to read them for awhile, but have been putting it off as am afraid that I'll want to buy them all.

    Book Format question

I noticed that Harlequin is trying out trade paperback in their new lines (Red Dress Ink - chick lit, Luna - fantasy/romance). I'm in the states so you probably have a good idea of our buying habits, but I am generally put off a bit by the higher price on the trade paperbacks. If I want to...

    Weird email

What an underhanded way to communicate. :( You're right about watching what you say, none of us here are 100% anonymous and the written word lasts a long, long time.

Susanna Clarke: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Yepper, those are archaic spellings. If you've read any Jane Austen, some of the editions retain these as well.

    'Cabaret' and other musings...

The european cut has been released in the states on DVD as "Leon" and it's a completely different movie. There's at least 30 extra minutes, and it makes what was more of an action film into a full, rounded, tragic drama. I recommend it, it's a beautiful work and I don't understand the purpose...

    Weird email

 That's pretty freaky actually. Do you have it set so that you can receive email from members here? Or would it have to be someone who knew your email address otherwise?

    Suggestions for a melancholic

I find Hemingway's work more depressing than otherwise. I'm sure other people might disagree with me, though. Welcome!
