    Hi

There's not a separate section, but there are a few non-native English speakers here so you may find some books in common.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Drowned Moon - a short story collection by Glenn Blake, one of my college profs. I loaned it to someone ages ago and never got it back, so I was happy to see it again.

    Happy Birthday Martin

    Happy Birthday, Lord Martin!

The Battle of Maldon (991 ad) part one

My first thought is, start with the action, not the description. It also might be easier to read in a more traditional paragraph structure. I rarely tell someone to use less adjectives, but sometimes they do clutter up the action a bit. The dialogue seems a bit formulaic, and you might want...

    Plot points you can't stomach?

While I agree with you in 99% of the cases, I'm OK with Gandalf coming back in LOTR. :D

    Plot points you can't stomach?

A couple recent posts made me think of this topic: Are there any types of activities in books you don't want to read about? For me, it's a rape scene. If I know there's one in the book, I won't read it. Tend to avoid movies that are that way, too. There's also a movie I saw a few...

    Books you've grown out of

I haven't. Haven't been keeping up, either, is he done with it? I'm not starting any more series until the author is done. Too irritating. :p

    Well noone mentions it but,,,

Ooh, an alternate universe Harry Potter. That would rock! Or be really bad fan fiction. It's hard to say.

    Holocaust Books

The Reader. An interesting take on the subject.

    Books you've grown out of

I had the same thing happen with Stephen King, I read all I could get my hands on and then one day after the Dark Half, never picked up another one. I might reread Christine or Firestarter one day, but right now the only one I own is The Eye of the Dragon, which is fantasy and completely...

Fiction involving animals (and deffo not in a rude way!)

Animal Farm of course. That might not be what you're looking for, tho.

    Philosophy books

On my "TBR" list, actually my to be re-read list. It's a good, welcoming place to start. I suggest that once you get into the heavy stuff you find someone to talk it out with, I know that none of the stuff I read in college made any sense until I had class lecture and discussion on it.

    José Saramago: Blindness

Was quite impressed, it's difficult to create a modern allegory that has relevance and meaning. The nameless characters in a nameless city are haunting despite being undefined, as each is the stand in for a human response. We as readers slip in and out of their heads easily, which is one...

    José Saramago: Blindness

Finished it last night! I'll post my commentary in the BOTM thread, tho.

    Behaviour of the faceless man.

Here I am! I pretty much am the same I think, tho in person I have the disadvantage of zoning off frequently and not paying attention to what is going on around me, which doesn't come thru on a forum. I've been in other forums that are not very carefully monitored where there exist a lot of...

When am I *ever* getting to those?

Oryx and Crake, Lonesome Dove, several Alice Hoffman, the collected works of Tom Wolfe . . .

    No Chapters

I don't care either way, since I tend not to stop at the end of the chapter anyway. For some reason, I usually stop about halfway into a chapter. I find it easier to get back into it when I pick it up again that way.

Your favourite bookshop / place to buy books

All of the above. I'll even do a quick browse at the grocery store. My favorite for new book shopping is Borders (mostly b/c I used to work there, but they have a slightly better selection than B&N, too) and for used, I like ones that have a section of old, musty hardcovers.

Read more then 1 book at once?

I do occasionally, generally because I don't have the right book with me when i'm out somewhere, but do for some reason have another one. The only thing good about it is that I start into the other book without a break. Otherwise, I tend to read a few magazines in between. I need to let my...
