Interesting, so many have recommended this book but this is the only discussion thread I found for it. I'm over halfway thru right now and am enthralled. He reveals his characters' flaws without condemning them for it.
Depends on what you read I guess. I think if you read, say, only romance novels or westerns your entire life, you'd probably have a distorted view of how people think and act.
You might join rhapsodybookclub.com, you can tell from their reviews generally what the level of intimacy is.
Since you seem to like mysteries as well, try Dee Henderson. She writes inspirational mystery/romance.
I read the first few, but the main frustration I had was that once all the characters start heading off in different directions, your favorite doesn't show up for hundreds of pages. I stopped after book 5. If and when he ever finishes the series, I'll give it another go, but not until I have...
Popular Science is one I've been enjoying recently, if you have any interest in the subject matter. Scientific American is good, too, but expensive.
One of the weekly news magazines would be good, too. Time, Newsweek, etc.
I shop used first, and if I can't find it I go for the new stuff, except for a few select authors. I've also been known to check out the hardcover at the library and buy the paperback when it comes out.

It was the version they used when I saw it...
Finally finished this, I kept getting distracted by girly fantasy. At any rate, I found some parts of the middle a touch tedious, as if at some point I was not involved in the story as much as analyzing the author's performance. But, it was a worthwhile read and very thought provoking. I'll...
In my opinion, translations seem to date quickly. I don't automatically go for the newest one, but a victorian translation can bore you to tears.
Also, consider the publisher. A well respected publisher will put for the extra effort to hire a decent translator.
