I'll third Dumas' Count of Monte Cristo and 2nd Clavell's Shogun
Have a read of the blurb of A suitable boy by Vikram Seth, and decide whether or not the subject matter appeals to you.
Islandia by Austin Tappan Wright isn't bad, but can be considered a bit too 'sedate' for some...
Currently reading Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire. Thus far it's above average, though not quite living up to its hype. I've not gotten to the meat of it yet though- the beginining 50 pages or so smacks of filler to me.
I've got a feeling you'll like it.
Natural History's one of those books I've been eyeing up for sometime, but keep putting back on the shelf for some reason. I'm interested to know what you make of it.
Finished Ambrose's Band of Brothers which wasn't bad, but seemed a bit dull to be honest. In places it did seem like the author simply cutted and pasted the soldiers' interviews into the book without adding much insight of his own. As for the 'brotherhood' aspect of war, there are better books...
I only got around to watching the series a few weeks ago. I'm currently reading through the book. They actually complement each other quite well, each touching on areas the other doesn't. Granted the overall picture's the same, but it's the little touches that set them apart.
The book seems...
Personally, I preferred Kay's 'Lions of Al-Rassan' to 'Tigana,' but they're both pretty good.
You may want to check out some of David Gemmel's works. They may not promote the idea of chivalry (IMHO, neither does Harry Potter), but going back to your 'kingdoms, knights, magic' it seems right...
I'm sure I've rambled about this before but...
1. When did your love of reading begin?
When I was a little one, I loved those tape with book things, and my mum invested a lot of time in getting me to read along. I still remember a number of fairy tales that I read as a young one. Then I...
I read Once recently, and though it's not bad, it just didn't appeal to me. This particular one seemed a bit too padded for my liking. Lots of gratuity, without enough tension and scares for my liking. Shame, since Herbert's usually pretty good.
Going back to the original topic, the films I'm looking forward to:
The Village (by the dude who brought us sixth sense- the latest trailer's scary)
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Day After Tommorow
Spiderman 2
It's been so long since the last post that I can't remember what was happening (though I do remember Raven's one getting weird at the end).
I'll read it through and mull it over- typing tomorrow or Friday.
I've noticed that too with my brothers. I guess your relatives trust your tastes. That plus you've read those books already- take the books you buy, then pass them through the 'filter' - after all you wouldn't recommend books you didn't like to people who don't otherwise read much.
But...
