    Grammar Bible

Warriner's was a standard textbook for high school English in Stephen King's day. It doesn't necessarily work as a reference book; it's full of exercises as well as rules and advice, though the rules and advice are there.

    The Bible?

As for reading the Bible (remember that topic?), there is a tradition in some Jewish circles of married couples reading the Song of Songs to each other on Friday nights (the start of Sabbath). Since my husband is Jewish, we do that sometimes. It's the best love poem ever written. *fans self*

    The Bible?

I'm going to stick my neck waaaay out here and guess that RFK isn't suggesting that the universe was created in six days and all that. His mention of 2000 years gives me a clue that he is focussing on the New Testament. Maybe he is saying that the story of Jesus, etc., has never been disproved...

John Kennedy Toole: A Confederacy Of Dunces

Oh yes! The Neon Bible--I forgot to mention that. I didn't find it as satisfying as Confederacy, which is a much more mature effort, of course. Neon Bible is also very grim. I got a lot out of it, however, as an artifact. I could see a lot of precursors to Confederacy--a lot of the same...

    The Bible?

Though it may be a small thing, I usually refer to the Bible as a great work of literature, instead of saying "fiction." Calling it fiction might be inflamatory to some people; but I feel (and hope) that calling it literature focusses on the writing without necessarily getting into the Truth...

    Do you dream about books?

A lot of my dreams start by whatever adventure I'm going to get into interrupting my reading. I also handle books a lot in my dreams; they are a standard prop. And last night I dreamed I found a rare set in my collection (30 volumes that I hadn't noticed before), and spent the rest of the...

    Books to Movies?

The City and the Stars. It has the potential for awesome visuals, and movie technology has reached a point where it could be done.

    The Bible?

The thing about reading the Bible is that a lot of us know the stories from Sunday school by then. I read the King James Version for the style. While the Bible helped form the Western world's cultural frame of reference, the KJV was one of the peaks of English writing. Then, however, I read...

John Kennedy Toole: A Confederacy Of Dunces

From the first line, I could tell that this book was engaging and natural. The characters and situations are very broad, but the writing got me to settle into its world for the duration. I know a lot of people who enjoyed reading it along the way, but didn't finish it. Once they got the...

    Reading in the car?

I've heard that the front seat is better. A breeze from an open window might help too. Audio books would work around the problem. If the driver and other passengers don't want to hear it, then earphones; but here's something: motion sickness comes from the inner ear. I wonder if earphones...

i want to speed my reading

I read about 300 pages of fiction a day, at about two pages a minute. The story has to move along, though. This doesn't mean it has to be a constant thriller, but it does mean that long interludes of explanation are going to get my mind wandering. Non-fiction is a little harder. If it is...

    Vonnegut?

The book isn't full of battle scenes. It's more about absurdity and trauma. A lot of it takes place after the war. I re-read it recently, inspired by a discussion on this site, and found it more compellingly written than I had remembered.

    3 wives greet British man

How effectively a couple handle their marriage once they are married can be an issue in legal marriage too. My guess is that the marriage you describe is a second marriage for the mother of the 12-year-old. I get the impression that the mother has not communicated enough with her daughter...

    3 wives greet British man

In Western society, it's mostly a Christian heritage at this point, though there was already a trend toward it under the Romans and Greeks. As long as multiple marriage and gay marriage are outlawed, my husband and I will be married only under Common Law.

    3 wives greet British man

Yes. What my husband and I want more than an additional spouse is a patron.

    Preparing to write

Just to clarify: I probably shouldn't have used the word "separate." Maybe I should have said something like "dedicated." The reason is, we live in a one-room apartment, so we can't "shut the door," as you say. My husband and I have to work out all kinds of ways to cope with that. We work...

    Preparing to write

Well, I've been thinking about how to offer a serious answer to this question, and I've been observing my habits and how I get into a writing session. What I've come up with is this: I have a designated writing space, and I think it's become Pavlovian--when I sit there, I just start right...
