    Reading Fees

Well, yes, it should flow to the writer; but more often it "flows" drop by Chinese-water-torture drop.

    Grammar Bible

Grammar has a lot to do with word order and the logic of sentences. Double negatives and dangling modifiers are two examples of problems with grammar. Comma-splices and random capitalization are examples of problems with style. A handy book that covers both grammar and style is...

Large book chains vs. small indep.stores-which do you prefer?

The chains are shamefully oblivious to local authors, small presses, and books about local communities. A good independent bookstore will be creative in seeking these out.

    Edgar Allen Poe

I have a collection of Poe's stories and poems in a big, black, leather volume, which must be read on cold, windy nights. The Raven is an excellent poem technically. Consider this: And the silken sad uncertain rustling... Can't you just hear it?

    Your child's favorite book(s)

Though I don't have children, I do have the privilege of reading to children sometimes. A six-year-old girl of my acquaintance loves Eloise and Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. A four-year-old boy I know can't get enough of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie. There are so many more. I have a large collection...

Have you ever met one of your favourite authors?

Through professional contacts twice removed (it's a long story), I managed to meet Alice Walker. This was a dream come true. She was gracious. If I could meet an author from the past, I think it would be Mark Twain. When I was little, I wanted to be one of his Angelfish. This was a club...

What fiction book do you keep reading over and over?

I read a lot of poetry, and I read quite a few poems over and over. It probably works the same way as listening to songs over and over. But ok, here's a confession: I've never stopped rereading Dr. Seuss. When it comes to his books, I'll be a child forever!

    Accents

Each accent has its own cadence as well as pronunciation. The rhythm of sentences can show an accent even if you don't use phonetic spelling. A classic children's book, By the Great Horn Spoon, can provide a lesson in that. Lots of characters come and go, and you can tell all their accents...

    Looking like your avatar...

The bookworm is a type of grub. I have opened old books and found them wiggling in their holes. Real bookworms aren't cuddly. I find it interesting, however, that a search of Google Images turns the following up as one of its first results...

Moby Dick - Chapter 132 - The Symphony

Huckleberry Finn, Chapter 19 Two or three days and nights went by; I reckon I might say they swum by, they slid along so quiet and smooth and lovely. Here is the way we put in the time. It was a monstrous big river down there -- sometimes a mile and a half wide; we run nights, and laid...

Is There a Doctor in the House!?

Yep -- you need a prescription oral antibiotic; and frankly, you need it on an emergency basis.

    40k words enough?

Some novels for children and teenagers can be that short. Some romance novels too. 60,000 is a more normal minimum for most categories. 70-80,000 is better.

    Which Book-Cover Did You Buy?

In the U.S., the one choice of cover is a particularly hideous green.

Uh oh. You need to talk to some librarians.

How often do you buy books?

We were up to two or three bookstore browsings per day, but we had to stop cold for budget reasons about two months ago. Now we're starting back in. Three times this past week.
