Elegance - Kathleen Tessaro (purchased because it looks cool (black edged pages) and because a friend of mine has the original book it's based on, so I can read that too.

I have quite a few of the Wordsworth Classics in my collection, all with images on the cover and blue spines and costing about £1 each. They tend to have an Introduction to the author/story and some suggestions for further reading. I prefer these over the Penguin Classics, as Penguin usually...
Isn't JK Rowling Scottish?
Trainspotting is indeed very good, but can be hard to understand if you are not familiar with the Scots. The film was apparantly subtitled in America. I lived in Scotland for 12 years before moving to London and I went to see a film here called Sweet Sixteen...
*note to self - must create alchemist topic and move posts*
By the time I got to the end of the book I thought the message was that you already have what it is you seek, but it is not until you show you are willing to make the effort and personal journey to seek it that you will find it...
Perhaps the simplicity was lost on me then. I have only read the first 15 pages of Pi but I already like it more than the Alchemist.
I can't stress enough that I didn't hate the Alchemist though, and gave it 3 out of 5 golden eggs when I rated it, it was just missing something that I can't...
The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho
Discussion started by Ali in another thread:
I read it but was disappointed with it. Luckily it was only two hours out of my life. It wasn't absolutely terrible, but I think I was expecting more. I can't even pinpoint the parts of it that annoyed me, it was...
I've just started Life of Pi for a book group, and next monrh should be Oryx and Crake, so will get that too.
I would be interested in your thoughts on the Alchemist when you have read it.

Tell us what books you have recently purchased so we can look at you in awe, or laugh and point at you for buying tripe.
For me:
Yann Martel - Life of Pi
Malorie Blackman - Noughts and Crosses
Alice Sebold - The Lovely Bones
Charles Dickens - Bleak House (Everyman's Library Edition)
PG...
I agree that it is a very hard question to answer, and I would also need to know about the person whom I was to suggest a book to. There's a lot riding on just one book to hook someone into reading, so the story and the writing style would need to be matched to the individual as no book is...
I join so many online reading groups that they tell me what I am going to read next :D
Otherwise, I tend to buy many books at the same time so just try and find one I am in the mood for out of my collection. This depends on the time of day I need to choose the book, because first thing on a...
Hi Mary Lou, welcome to the forum.
The book you are searching for is called 'The Empty Pot' and should be easily available.
I did a quick check and amazon.co.uk have it - http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0613004973/ref=sr_aps_books_1_1/026-8233196-5498847
If you are in the US...
Agreed. I tried to get rid of the latest Harry Potter by lending it to people and requesting they lend it to someone else. It always came back though :(

Several times I have purchased books and then found out I already have them. Highly annoying. This wasn't a problem all those years ago when I only owned four books.

I gave a load of books to a charity shop when I was moving from Scotland to London and didn't have room for them. That's probably the only time I've given them away as a group.
I don't bother selling them, if a friend wants to read a book that I have I usually give it to them and don't...
