John Boyne: The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

I've just read this - it's brilliant! It's written rather like 'The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night.' But without the autism, just very simply. A tale of the holocaust from the innocent eyes of the nine year old son of a German Commandant. Very moving and chilling.

    Julian Clary

I've just read 'Murder Most Fab' and I loved it. Funny, entertaining, unputdownable and some great characters, especially his mother! I enjoyed 'A Young Man's Passage' too, but it looks to me like he's got a great future as a novelist. What a clever and beautiful man he is! Some folk have...

    George Melly: Scouse Mouse

You got me wondering, so I looked on Amazon. 'Owning-up' published 1965 may be the one I read. I'm not sure. Another mark against Wikipedia!

    George Melly: Scouse Mouse

I read a bio-type book by George Melly in the early sixties. It had a big impact on me, I found it fascinating. Can't remember why now though. Would that be the same one?

    Peter Cook.

I'm just reading his first wife Wendy's book. I don't like her much - I'm probably just jealous - but I'm finding it very interesting. I shall read the other biography (Harry Thompson's) again when I've finished. Are there any other Peter Cook lovers here?

    Will Self

Being a big fan of Will Self, I did attempt to read Cock and Bull. I didn't even complete the first two pages! He is not an entertaining writer. I don't know if he has uncovered any great truths or discovered the meaning of how to cope with life, but unless he starts to write in way which...

Best ultra-violent, funny, emotionally involving, tragic, cynical, intelligent...

I can't believe you said that.:D :D :D Ever heard of Irvine Welsh? I'll let you into a secret - most films started out as books! I'll tell you another secret - most books are much better than the film.:D Yup, the film is great. But the book is much greater.

Do You Get Mentally Fatigued When Reading?

Reading is knackering. Even fast paced, easy to read novels - particularly bad ones.

    Family Guy

I lurve this series.:D Anyone else? Love it or hate it - you must have seen it. Want to discuss? Stewie is great, wonderful, handsome, brilliant, witty, clever and all the other flattering adjectives which I can't be bothered to type - not even for Stewie.

Fannie Flagg: Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe

I didn't know it was a book either. We are a bit thick aren't we? I loved the film, but most of all it's the name. I think about it every time I see a green tomato. Please tell us how you felt about the complete novel when you've finished.

    "Dumbledore Is Gay" says Rowling

Of course Dumbledore was gay - he entered Godric's Hollow and Slyther(d)in.:D I should pretend I thought that up, but I'll be honest and admit it came from Jonathan Ross's writers.

Dee Brown: Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee

They've now made a film of this book. I watched it the other day and it's very good. I'm glad I persevered and read the book first, but it's not essential, the film stands up for the truth.

    What is fun?

You can enjoy a cup of coffee - but you wouldn't call it fun, would you sparky? Yes it's fun getting the better of someone chris. But doesn't that confirm we are a race of sociopaths? ( not necessarily violent ones!) I'm under the impression 'fun' is as misused a word as 'love,' ie., 'fun...
