Write everyday even if its not on your book. A Journal or a Blog or whatever you do is going to keep your writing machinery lubed up and ready to go. Thats probably the best way to get out of writers block--prevention.
As for the WYSIAC dilemma...all I can think of is to make it into an...
When I read through the list there were around 3000 folks that had voted? Something like that. Perhaps the sample was too small in the poll, the results of which were weighted. Each person voting assigned a value to the book--can't recall how much, and then the results were tabulated. Who...
I've gotten to A Man Rides Through (after much cursing under my breath of the plodding pace) and it seems that Mirror was more of a prolog--thats the sort of building he's done. Taxing is a good way to put it but I'll take your advice and try to find the rest of the TC books.
That had to be a tough call because without that whole Bombadil/Barrow-wight sequence you completely miss why Pip's sword did so much damage to the Witch King and part of how Aragorn was able to pick up on thier trail and all sorts of little storyline tidbits.
I think they could have...
In the books its Pippin and Merry because they grow so much and Frodo is so overrated. In the movie it'd have to be Gollum because he completely stole the show from Frodo and Sam.
Oddly Terry Brooks Sword of Shanara is Post-Apocalyptic. Greg Bear's Anvil of the Stars takes place after Earth is destroyed in Forge of God. This Immortal and Damnation Alley by Roger Zelazny are must read PA books. Ben Bova's Orion is a good one and might fall into this category--but you...
1. Roger Zelazny
2. Tolkein
3. Joel Rosenberg
4. T.H. White
5. Tad Williams
There are several I read like Goodkind, Donaldson and on a rare occasion Anthony that won't ever go on my favorites list but what else can I do when I run out of good books to read?
I read Xanth up to Golem in the Gears and totally lost interest. They're cute, they're funny, but they're books not puppies and after awhile I just got tired of them. They read like they were knocked out to make the mortgage payment that month. I can't consider them serious fantasy works...
To me Asimov's original Foundation Trilogy is essential. I don't know if you can say "I read SF" unless you have read or plan to read it. It just vibrates through modern SciFi, where have you seen a city that covers a whole planet recently?
I think Haldeman does a pretty good job showing the flipside of what Heinlein is trying to say in Starship Troopers. The problem was that he kept showing it and showing it and showing it...whew. The book was an exhausting read. I think he overused ST as an outline. Also the idea that...
I don't know if its a gender thing or not. I remember the stereotype--heck I was the stereotype--of the nerdy boy reading thick books rather than going out for sports. I never knew any nerdy girls which is a shame. But is it accurate? I mean, do you have to be a geek to read SF and Fantasy...
Thanks Martin. It's been a busy few years--not much time for reading let alone posting (or sleeping, or breathing, etc.). Lets just say when IT hit the fan I was standing in front of the blades yawning.
Regarding S.R. Donaldson--now that I'm into the second volume of this book I fear...
I don't know if there are any authors I actually hate. I remember when I was in school and I was forced to read certain books that I hated the forced part. I'd rather just read. Hmm...
I will say this, every time I've read Stephen R. Donaldson I end up wishing I hadn't. Right now I'm in...
Fairetale? by Feist is a good one. I also like Joel Rosenberg's Guardians of the Flame series--which has just come out in omnibus editions from Baen. Zelazny's Amber is good, thats one of my favorites, and Andre Norton has some pretty good Fantasy stuff too in addition to her SF works. I've...
I've just finished Zelazny's Amber series and Doorways in the Sand, which is a good read if you've never read it. I'm about done with Donaldson's The Mirror of Her Dreams, which is sort of an emotional epic more than anything. Its pretty good, but I'm glad its a library book.
I've got a few...
