ds,
I'm still cool! I swear! :) Not wise, cool! Don't disagree or I'll whack you with my cane! :D And besides, you've completely thrown me off as well. Blue?! You're such a yellow kind of fellow.
I would have to agree. That story creeped me out too! Sometimes I can't help but think about that groove in the wall and it gives me the chills every time! Also second The Mist. There are such strong images in that story and they have been stuck in my head for years.
RolandOfGilead and MeHastings, I'm looking forward to hearing your choices.
I thought of yet another one. One of many possibilities from Steinbeck:
"Samuel rode lightly on top of a book and he balanced happily among ideas the way a man rides white rapids in a canoe. But Tom got into a...
To continue the VW theme there was the one where the guy was standing next to his prospective car at the dealership waiting for his wife to show up. The salesmen comes out with another couple and the key in his hand. The waiting guy panics and licks the door to lay his claim. Hard to explain...
Thanks Kook,
I was beginning to feel a little self-concious being the only poster in a thread I started! :) That's a good point about people not having their libraries with them at all times. Luckily, I could fine some of mine online.
Shakespeare. Always an excellent choice! And a...
Have you read anything by Michael Chabon? The Amazing Adventures Of Kavalier And Clay was an excellent novel that definitely seems to cover a lot of your criteria. Definitely an entertaining read filled with comic books, magic, golems and just about anything else you could ask for.
I felt this way about Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. Had heard it highly recommended by so many people but to me it kind of felt like My So Called Afterlife I didn't hate it but was definitely disappointed.
Now that I've figured out how to add one, I can actually join this thread. Mine is the author photo from the copy of LOTR that I read growing up. It has a bit of a magical quality about it for me and takes me back to those "reading under the covers with a flashlight" days. :)
The "best opening line" thread got me thinking about other great passages from novels I have read. Several of my favorites come from A River Runs Through It by Norman Maclean. A few examples:
In our family, there was no clear line between religion and fly fishing. We lived at the junction...
Good idea! I guess I'll have to get going on it! Like you said, maybe I can try to reconstruct my list from the past year or so. We'll see how the ol' memory holds up
I've been meaning to start a list of the books I read. Maybe this post will be the jolt I need to get me to actually do it! I think it would be interesting to look back and see how your tastes change over time.
I have the first three Riftwar books but have not read them yet. Am I right in assuming that those three can be considered a "stand-alone"trilogy, not necessarily dependent on later books?
Like others have mentioned, I tend to go back and forth between the classics and everything else. It's nice to have a quick, fun read sometimes but there's nothing like sinking back into the warm, rich works of Austen or Dickens.
