    I just finished reading...

Hang in there. I thought I saw the cliché ending coming too but I was pleasantly surprised. I thought he did a very nice job of wrapping it up.

    Booker Prize 2005

Maybe I'll have to try another one of his books. I assume they all take place on Cape Breton then? He painted a very bleak picture of life on the island in the stories I read.

    Booker Prize 2005

Let me know what you think of it because like I said, his writing style was definitely intriguing. Most of the stories in Island were very dark with some very nice imagery. I imagine it would add a whole new layer too if you know the area he's writing about.

    Booker Prize 2005

As far as Australian novels go, I really enjoyed the Thorn Birds. Actually, I don't know if McCullough actually lives in Australia, I think I read that she lives on one of the surrounding islands? Anyway, I read Island by Alistair McLeod and wasn't overly impressed. He's definitely talented...

    Reading in June - Fantasy/Sci-Fi

Kookamoor, you've intrigued me! Maybe that series will have to move to the top of my Kay must-read list! Although it's beginning to sound like you can't go wrong with his books. I finished Tigana in a bleary-eyed marathon too! Good stuff!

    Booker Prize 2005

I had wondered about them not being eligible because of publication date. To answer your question, I wasn't crazy about the TTW either. I though it was kind of an original rendition of time travel but it was definitely lacking in other areas. As far as KR, I couldn't recommend it more highly...

    James Michener

I picked up Centennial a while back at a used book store and it is currently sitting in my TBR pile. I did read the first 20 pages or so and it definitely pulled me in. Might be even more interesting for me since it's written about my neck of the woods. :)

    Booker Prize 2005

I just finished The Kite Runner and would say it's definitely deserving of consideration.

I just started Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. From everything I've read it sounds like a pretty intriguing premise. So far he seems to be a talented writer...

I'm waiting for my wife to finish this book and I can't wait to read it. She agreed that his descriptions are wonderfully detailed.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

Sorry Kook! :o I guess I got lulled into thinking everyone's read it! Stupid mistake and I hope I didn't ruin it for you!

    Book Reccomendation? :)

Here's a couple of ideas. East Of Eden by John Steinbeck Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Very different from one another but both are easy to get lost in!

Probably no backyard BBQ's after reading this one, huh? :)

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe

The only thing I would say is that the wardrobe/lampost is such a wonderful introduction to Narnia itself that I would have a hard time not recommending the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe to a first-time reader. I definitely don't think it's over the top but when it almost seemed to have some...

    Viriconium by M. John Harrison

Hey everyone. I just had a question about this book. Unless I'm mistaken, it seems to be out of print (at least in the US) and the only thing I could find on Amazon was this...

    Imagery

I would recommend an author by the name of Jhumpa Lahiri. She has two books, Interpreter Of Maladies a collection of short stories that won the Pulitzer a few years back, and Namesake her first novel that came out a year or two ago. She writes about immigrants from India and their transitions...
