Maybe I'll have to try another one of his books. I assume they all take place on Cape Breton then? He painted a very bleak picture of life on the island in the stories I read.
Let me know what you think of it because like I said, his writing style was definitely intriguing. Most of the stories in Island were very dark with some very nice imagery. I imagine it would add a whole new layer too if you know the area he's writing about.
As far as Australian novels go, I really enjoyed the Thorn Birds. Actually, I don't know if McCullough actually lives in Australia, I think I read that she lives on one of the surrounding islands? Anyway, I read Island by Alistair McLeod and wasn't overly impressed. He's definitely talented...
Kookamoor, you've intrigued me! Maybe that series will have to move to the top of my Kay must-read list! Although it's beginning to sound like you can't go wrong with his books. I finished Tigana in a bleary-eyed marathon too! Good stuff!
I had wondered about them not being eligible because of publication date. To answer your question, I wasn't crazy about the TTW either. I though it was kind of an original rendition of time travel but it was definitely lacking in other areas. As far as KR, I couldn't recommend it more highly...
Kay, Guy Gavriel - Tigana - 9
Clarke, Susanna - Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell - 9
Tolkien, J.R.R. - Fellowship Of The Ring - 10
Tolkien, J.R.R. - Two Towers - 10
Tolkien, J.R.R. - Return Of The King - 10
Niffenegger, Audrey - The Time Traveler's Wife - 6
Rowling, J.K. - Sorcerer's Stone -...
I picked up Centennial a while back at a used book store and it is currently sitting in my TBR pile. I did read the first 20 pages or so and it definitely pulled me in. Might be even more interesting for me since it's written about my neck of the woods. :)
I just started Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell. From everything I've read it sounds like a pretty intriguing premise. So far he seems to be a talented writer...
Here's a couple of ideas.
East Of Eden by John Steinbeck
Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry
Very different from one another but both are easy to get lost in!
The only thing I would say is that the wardrobe/lampost is such a wonderful introduction to Narnia itself that I would have a hard time not recommending the Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe to a first-time reader.
I definitely don't think it's over the top but when it almost seemed to have some...
Hey everyone.
I just had a question about this book. Unless I'm mistaken, it seems to be out of print (at least in the US) and the only thing I could find on Amazon was this...
I would recommend an author by the name of Jhumpa Lahiri. She has two books, Interpreter Of Maladies a collection of short stories that won the Pulitzer a few years back, and Namesake her first novel that came out a year or two ago. She writes about immigrants from India and their transitions...
