Thanks for that excellent review of a collection I've had on my amazon wish list for a while. Although to be honest I'm not sure whether I now want to bump it up the list or not.
You might want to check out Kenzaburo Oe, Yasunari Kawabata and Shusaku Endo.
I had Yasushi Inoue recommended...
I can't really answer the original question as the copy on my shelves is a replacement for the second-hand version that was falling to pieces when I read it about 20 years ago.
Whilst I don't think that people who enjoy Ulysses can be lumped together as 'Pretentious prats' anymore than TDVC...
I agree that is does seem strange. I based this statement on what I'd read on the ol’intermong and the chronological order of the half a dozen of his books I've read. I could well be being lead up the garden path by that, if Zolipara, who has read the lot in the original Norwegian, ever wanders...
Knut Hamsun is one of the hidden gems of world literature, and an author whose writing changed in style and outlook gradually over time. For those familiar with his work, Dreamers is closer to his later, more light-hearted stories like ‘The Women at the pump,’ than to his earlier, darker and...
I've had a look at both of these sites. Library thing is let down by the limit of 200 entries for free, although this may change if the owner can generate income from adverts and pay-per-click links to amazon etc. The listal site seems to be totally free and offers a way for groups of people to...
My TBR list is getting longer and longer. If I include my Physical TBR Shelf of books, my wish list on Amazon.com, wish list on Amazon.co.uk, list of Norwegien books suggested by Zolipara and books by favourite authors I've not got round to yet, I think it all adds up to at least 300 odd. Given...
MC: Thank you for jotting down some more of your thoughts on this potentially award winning thread. As you’ve posed a couple of questions, I’ll quickly respond to them before giving you the chance to have the final say if you so wish. As I suspect prolonged correspondence on this matter will...
...abebooks, half.com...I'm gunna have to write this stuff down, apparently that stamp is smaller than I thought...
*makes mental note to pay more attention to modern world*
...Sound of penny dropping...so that's why some of my paperbacks are bigger than others, they're paperback originals...what I know about the contemporary book scene you could write on the back of a stamp, with a large felt tip pen...
...I must have been lucky to get my copies then, although I...
Ok, thanks for that. I don’t post as much (partly as I only read two books in March & April, naughty me) but I will still post if I have info that can help.
I don’t really know of a forum that discusses World Lit across the board, I suspect the only way that could happen is if a forum had...
The only problem I have with this thread is the thought of how many authors you're going to discover, how many will then end up on my ever expanding TBR list, and just how much it'll all cost me.
Anyway of the above I can make suggestions of where to go next for a few:
Ismail Kadare
I...
I think this is quite an important aspect of Fante’s writing, in particular his short stories. I’ve read a number of reviewers who much prefer his novels, which they regard as being darker and richer in content than the more ‘sentimental’ shorter work. Personally I take the opposite view...
Rashomon prompted one of my favourite Simpsons gags:
Marge: 'You liked Rashōmon.'
Homer: 'That's not how I remember it.'
I'm currently half way through re-watching Ran, due to time pressures I'm having to spread it over two nights.
Out of the dozen or so Kurosawa films I've seen I'd...
Short answer:
Oooo patronizing, that’s a big word for a little lady.
Slightly longer answer:
MC, thanks for your views on my posting style, I’m always willing to take part in a frank exchange of views. Unfortunately I’m not really in a position to respond in kind as your own posts...
