Thanks Zolipara. I probably will try to track an Elric collection down on Amazon and just start at the beginning.
Ainulindale, I was hoping you would chime in. I had seen several of his books on your Top 200 list but of course none of the ones that were available to me. Luckily, I haven't...
Great description Wabbit! I have 100 years on my shelf and have been wanting to read it for a long time. This thread has definitely moved it further up my list! However I was planning on reading Crimson Petal next since my wife has been raving about it for weeks and you highly recommended that...
Thanks, Zolipara. I've had my eye out for those. I'd like to find a collection of them in one book someday. In the meantime I was just trying to pick through this gigantic stack but I might just have to take a stab and hope for the best.
I found a seemingly good stash of his works at a local used bookstore but must admit I am completely unfamiliar with his work. I have heard many people here on the forum recommend him so I was wondering if any of the works listed below are worth picking up. Basically are any of these...
About 1/6th of David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas occurs in a post-apocalyptic Hawaii and these sections were some of my favorite parts of the book. I also enjoyed The Stand and The Postman .
Another favorite is from Jane Austen's Pride And Prejudice:
"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife."
Are you asking whether you should read the books or watch the movie first? Or are you saying you've already watched the movies and were wondering about the books?
If the first, then I would definitely say read the books and then watch the movies. To me it's always preferable to create the...
Worms, huh? Don't know if I'll pick up those journals but the carnivorous plants on the other hand...
We actually subscribe to the 100 Greatest Books ever written series through Easton Press and I know that Origin Of Species is on there. I wasn't sure if I'd actually read it when it came...
Ronny-
Have you read any of Krakauer's other books? I have several in my TBR pile but haven't gotten to them yet. My wife read "Into Thin Air" and said it was quite good while several friends have read "Into The Wild" and rave about it.
I'm also quite intrigued by "Kingdom Of Heaven"...
That is a nice way of saying it. When I said LOTR was in a completely different class that's kind of what I meant. I realize now that it didn't really come across that way. Oh well, there's lots of stuff in this thread I wish I didn't write but it's too late now.
Of course, African swallows are not migratory, ds
As far as Galaxy Quest goes, I also though Justin Long (leader of the nerdy fan club) and Sam Rockwell (character w/o a name, later Guy Fleegman) were very funny! Actually, once I started making that list I realized that basically everyone...
I enjoyed some of the Dragonlance/Forgotten Realms around junior high time which is kind of the targeted age for the books IMO. Even then I remember getting kind of bored with invincible heroes and bumbling baddies. Nothing wrong with them as a way to get kids reading but there are so many...
I agree. Leave well enough alone. I agree that most of the cgi additions don't really matter much but to me they still throw off the feel of the older movies. Too much extra "stuff" added in makes it feel kind of gimmicky and throw together. At the very least I wish Lucas would just give in...
The running gag in Holy Grail about the swallows kills me every time. "It could grip it by the husk." Speaking of older comedies, I really like "Harvey" with Jimmy Stewart. One of his best roles IMO.
I also have a soft spot for "Galaxy Quest." I know, I know...
Well done, mage. I didn't think my idea was quite right. :)
Neonwaters, it might be worth looking into the Elizabeth Moon books if you're still interested in the general story line of a woman going into the army and dealing with life in what was considered a traditionally "man's world."
ja9 - I would definitely recommend giving "A River Runs Through It" a try, although I did enjoy the movie.
That passage from "The Origin of Species" definitely surprised me. Without having read it, I guess I always pictured it as a fairly dry, dusty scientific tome. The bit you cited was...
Going once, going twice...
Thought I'd give this thread one bump since a few people seemed interested at the time and might have forgotten about it since. After this, I promise that I'll just let it die a peaceful death :D
