War Of The Worlds was a great book and I'm a little nervous about the movie simply because the setting of the book made it so much more interesting IMO. Wabbit, have you indulged your Victorian love affair by reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel yet? Granted, it's not authentic Vic Lit but...
To be honest, I don't think that it makes you an asshole at all. In fact, I think that reading is far different from biking or cooking. It's not a hobby, it's a way of life. I think that there are two types of people - readers and non-readers. Granted there are different levels of zealotry...
I've read the first few pages and you're right, I was captured instantly! He seems like he's an incredible writer and I'm looking forward to getting to know the characters myself.
Great to hear, Wabbit. My wife's about 3/4 through and as soon as she's done, it's all mine! :) Judging by her late night reading marathons it would seem that she, too, is enjoying it!
I agree with the general concensus that it's not cheating by any means. However I've found that it's a much different experience. For one thing, you can't really go at your own pace. While reading I will often revisit a certain phrase or paragraph several times or flip back whole chapters to...
Magician by Raymond Feist. I've been wanting to read this one for ages and several recommendations around the forum have inspired me to finally go for it.
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell.
This was quite an interesting book in many ways. It was definitely one of the more unconventional novels I've ever read. As described by several reviewers in other parts of the forum, each of the six stories are intriguing and extremely well-written. It's...
Thanks a lot Kook! Now I guess I'll have to forget to add spoiler tags when I ask ds what he thought about that scene in Tigana where the amazons are attacking the giant chameleon with rusty razor blades.
Dragons and machine gunnin' monkeys, huh? I definitely need to read that book! :D
Thanks, Kook. It is weird that it was broken into two books. I remember thinking it was a little strange that the first two books of the "trilogy" had names that began Magician:... and the third one was completely different. Mystery solved. I'll have to check and see if mine are original or...
I'm almost done and it's definitely worth a read. I'm sure you've read a little bit about it but basically it's six stories that span centuries and continents yet are all interconnected. He visits each character and story, 1-6 and then goes backwards 6-1. Sorry if I'm telling you what you...
OK, now I'm a little confused. Above we had come to the conclusion that it was a stand alone trilogy but now I've noticed that there are four books:
Magician: Apprentice, Magician: Master, Silverthorn and A Darkness at Sethanon. Is that right? So those four can be read as stand alone? Are...
Lonesome Dove is the only one of his I've read but it instantly jumped into my all-time top ten. It was absolutely amazing! I was tempted to read some of the other ones in the series but I think I'll just leave it as it. It couldn't really get any better for me.
I'm no blue banana (and would never claim to be) but I would say give Tigana a try. It's the only one of Kay's I've read so far but I thought it was very good.
Definitely nothing wrong with a Saturday afternoon nap! Tigana does start a little slowly IMO but after that, hang on tight! :) Can't wait to hear what you think about it.
