Gabriel García Márquez: Love In The Time Of Cholera

See I didn't feel that Florentino loved Fermina. Can you really fall completely, endlessly, in love with someone that you've never spoken with or even been introduced to? I think it possible that he fell in love with the idea of Fermina, but not the person. I also doubt that Fermina would want...

Gabriel García Márquez: Love In The Time Of Cholera

I didn't find it romantic at all, unless you are referring to Fermina and Urbino's marriage, which was long and (mostly) happy. Imho, Florentino was just a dirty pervert.

    Your Very First Website...

I remember trying to open the BBC website on our university computers in 1994. All that happened was a little picture of the world in the corner of the screen rotated and I got to look at a blank screen. Then I got bored and wandered off. My first computer was an Acorn Atom, if that's of...

When looks are more important that content

Years ago I visited some huge English country house that had a fantastic looking library complete with those moveable step ladders and leather bound books galore. It was the best room ever, and made even better because I spotted a tatty paperback copy of Anne of Green Gables on one of the shelves.

    Favourite lines from a book

The huge golden space ship hung in the air in almost exactly the way a brick doesn't.

    Disagree with ending?

I never even finished The Gunslinger.

    Disagree with ending?

I've not read anything else by Jodie Picoult, but I know a lot of people rate her books. I'm not much of a people-person and ended up getting fed up with the characters rather than feeling sympathy for them.

    Dodie Smith

I've read 101 Dalmations and it's sequel, The Starlight Barking, which is more like science fiction. It's a long time since I read it (it's definitely aimed at children like the first dalmation book) and a lot of it has stuck with me probably because it's rather strange.

    Books you didn't finish

I never finished The Gunslinger by Stephen King. It just seemed so dreary to me.

    eye problem

You are very bad and wrong to be advising people to perform this kind of act on their eye. They should be stabbing it with a fork.

Will Robert Jordan Die before he finished wheel of time series?

I believe that if he stopped describing every minutia and got on with the story, and left off with all the sideways glances, skirt straightening and braid pulling, there would be plenty of space in one of his 1000+ page books to finish everything off quite satisfactorily.

    Random Facts Thread

He was punched in the face during a fight at school which caused one of his pupils to be permanently dilated.

    Disagree with ending?

My Sister's Keeper by Jodie Picoult. The ending is a real cop out and spoiled the whole book, which wasn't as good as the idea anyway.

    The "Ctrl+V" Game

453241 Which is too short, apparently.

    What's Your Purpose In Life?

Mine is to rid the world of custard cream biscuits. They are evil and must be destroyed. The most effective means of eliminating them, I find, is to eat them. Such is the sacrifice that I am willing to make for my fellow beings.

How do you arrange your bookshelves?

The ones which have shelf space are organised into genres. The rest (majority) huddle together in precarious piles on any available surface.
