If I had a kid, I would let him/her read Watership Down (Adams) and
The Wind in the Willows (Grahame). :) And probably Grimm Brothers fairy tales, so that subsequently they can be introduced to the works of Edgar Allan Poe. :devillook
One should watch Crime and Punishment/Prestuplenie i nakazanie (1970). Dare I say a comparable work in terms of its austere style and mood to the novel. Unfortunately it isn't very well-known.
