If you advise people to read the Silmarillion before the Hobbit and LOTR I can't see them bothering. IMHO the Silmarillion is heavy going and only worth reading as background to LOTR after you have read the books two or three times.

I would be inclined to try Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman before you start looking at the Discworld series. I personally feel that the first few books are not the best in the series but it's best read in the correct order to get a feel for the characters. Terry's childrens books...
I was going to start a new thread on this subject then I found this one.
I read 4 Land Rover Magazines, 2 or 3 computing Mags, 6 or more trade magazines at least every month. There's always a LR mag in the toilet. If I haven't got access to a book or mag I'll read anything, back of cereal...
Depends where I have finished the book. If I've finished it in bed I normally wait until the next day but if I finish before bed time I always start a new book.

The discworld series - Terry Pratchett
Lord of the Rings - JRR Tolkein
The Belgariad series - David Eddings
Good Omens - Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman
Xanth series - Piers Anthony
I could just keep going.

I noticed that there is a lot more obscene language in some of his later books which was when I gave up reading them. I'm not a prude in any sense but I found that the language got in the way of the plot and , to me, appeared to be totally gratuitous.

I can't bring myself to be that organised. Every now and then I rearrange the books on the shelf into alphabetical order and that acts a bit like a list as I rarely borrow books because I like to reread them. I may have to look at converting the attic to a library soon as the study is filling...
I tend to go to the bookshop and come out with an armful of books that have taken my fancy. I will then read any that are continuations of series' that I already have. When i run out of new books I tend to choose a book at random from the bookshelves and reread it.
When a new terry Pratchett...
Fancy cheating, what is the world coming to. I just look on the book shelves above my head.
R is for Ray Bradbury ptobably best known for Fahrenheit 451. Mind you more like a horror story than Sci Fi, all that book burning.

American Gods by Neil Gamain.
I discovered Neil Gamain when I read Good Omens written with Terry Pratchet. I found American Gods in Ottakars whilst browsing one day and decided to give it a try.

K is for Stephen King. Not widely aknowledged as a Sci Fi writer but the books written under the Richard Bachman pseudonym fall into that category.

Without a doubt it's got to be Death in the Discworld Books. There isn't really one reason but if you pinned me down I'd say that it's because of the way he took the place of the Hogfather on the book of the same name. We've got a model of Death as The Hogfather on the mantelpiece in the lounge...
I keep all of my books and so does my wife. As we like different genre that means a lot of books. We both like to re-read them later. The study has book shelves on all four walls.
