I was never a big fan of Ray Bradbury for some reason. Most of his plots feel like perfunctory sketches with twists tacked on.
"Catcher in the Rye" IS overrated...but fortunately "Nine Stories," "Raise High the Roofbeam" and "Franny and Zooey" are some of the finest texts in the english...
I agree, EOE is a classic. It's a shame they read "The Pearl" in so many high schools...it's quite pedestrian and wooden compared to this and many other Steinbeck texts. Took me years to get back into him after that.
Anyone see the original film that was made from this book (I know, I know, it's a book forum!)? It's actually pretty good, and the scene where Smith explains everything that happened directly before his hanging is shot really well, the lighting is such that the raindrops on the window look like...
And glad to be here. It looks excellent. Except one quibble: in the profile settings, there's a space for my three favorite books. All I get is THREE? I'll be up all night now...ha...
Anyway, I'm currently reading the Fiction issue of the Atlantic (hehe) and I'm looking forward to something...
