    Bingo! Thanks kelsue! I am pretty sure it is the Book of Saith trilogy. That sounds like exactly what he described and the timeline of Leigh Brackett's life (she died a few years after this) fits why she didn't write more after my dad read this, making it easier to forget. I ordered a copy...
