    Milan Kundera

A Romanian friend has been reading a French copy of Milan Kundera's Laughable Loves (Risible Amours), a collection of short stories. Has anyone else read this?

A Book to Take to Japan

Thanks for the suggestions! Has anyone read The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama? It has some great reviews on Amazon.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

I remember taking Brookner's The Next Big Thing on holiday when I was about 16 or 17 and found it very, very hard going!

A Book to Take to Japan

Hi all, I just wanted to get your opinion on the fiction book I should take on my trip to Japan next week. I'm after quite a light read. One of my favourite authors is Haruki Murakami and wondered whether you knew of any other great Japanese writers I should look up. Books by Japanese...

Who is your favourite author, and why?

At the moment, I'd say my favourite author is Haruki Murakami. I don't tend to read many books by the same author, but I've read three of his. I've yet to find a writer who I've really been compelled to go on to read his or her ouvre. Then again, I'm not the most prolific reader.

Lionel Shriver: We Need To Talk About Kevin

I found the book absolutely captivating. Sometimes the author gets carried away with her fancy words, but it was a cracking read all in all.

June 2009: Salman Rushdie: Midnight's Children

I don't mean to be disrepectful about the book because it has had almost unrivalled success - the Booker of Bookers and all that - but does it become easier to read? I'm not looking for a light read but after reading pages without understanding a single thing, it got a bit too much. Perhaps...

June 2009: Salman Rushdie: Midnight's Children

I got to page 150 and stopped. I found it far too challenging!

    Favorite female singers

As this is a music thread and many of the people who read this will be into creative and poetic writing, I think it would be appropriate to mention the poetic and extremely talented Joanna Newsom. I used to listen to other artists but now I only listen to her. Her songs (especially on...

    Author: Most Read...

I'm ashamed to say it's Danielle Steel because they were the only books available when I was younger. I'm a guy.

Novels where the main character has a social phobia/anxiety

I've read the book. It doesn't make the kid a sociophobe (sp?).

Novels where the main character has a social phobia/anxiety

I'm looking for fiction books where the protagonist has a social phobia or social anxiety. Does anyone know any books relating to this topic? I think it'd be a good read. Thanks.

    What books have you hated?

I thought "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby was a let-down. The characters aren't believable and I didn't actually care what happened to them.

    Frank McCourt: Angela's Ashes

I read Angela's Ashes about 2-3 years ago and I read 'Tis straight after. Don't remember much of it but it certainly was an eye-opener at the time.

Mitch Albom: The Five People You Meet In Heaven

I've read "Tuesdays with Morrie" by Albom. It was so thin that I think I read it in a day or two. I wasn't blown away by it enough to move onto "5 people...".

What is the longest book/work you've ever read?

I'm reading "Of Human Bondage" by W. Somerset Maugham at the moment. At exactly 700 pages, it's probably the longest book I've ever attempted.

    First book you ever read?

For me it must have been The Twits by Roald Dahl. It was all about Roald Dahl when I was a boy. Great author.

    Recently Purchased/Borrowed

Just got The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood after a recommendation.

Which Dan Brown To Read First?

I read Angels & Demons after I read The Da Vinci Code. There are a few references to Angels & Demons in The Da Vinci Code as the former book is the first Robert Langdon novel but it doesn't really matter which way round you read them. With all the hype surrounding The Da Vinci Code, you would...
