Well, here's a classic novel for you. Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy. Set in rural England...all about Tess' life and her conflict with the traditional societal values.

Two that I've just recently read for class: Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood Both are dystopia.

The Red Tent by Anita Diamant is about a family of strong women. I would also recommend the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich for more light-hearted, fun books about a strong--or perhaps headstrong--female. They're hilarious. Neither of these suggestions are fantasy books, however...
