    My 10 year old is reading "Leven Thumps and the Eyes of Want" My 8 year old is reading "Icefire" My 7 year old just finished the Artemis Fowl graphic novel. They're also reading Calvin and Hobbes and improving their vocabulary in the process.

    Could it have been "Oddkins" by Dean Koontz? it was released in 1988 and sounds similar to what you're looking for. I haven't read it in ages, so I can't be sure. The cover sounds right too. if you search on Amazon, you might be able to find it. It's out of print now.
