June 2008 - Book Group Suggestions

Of suggestions made so far I would second Main Street by Sinclair Lewis and Fathers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev.

    Seafaring Novels

One I was really impressed with was Sacred Hunger by Barry Unsworth. It is set on a slave ship. Was a joint winner of the Booker when first published.

    Books (Novels)

I have a lot of those on my TBR pile. The only one I've read which I'll comment on is Their Eyes Were Watching God - just finished it and I loved it.

    Libraries vs book stores

I buy pretty much all my books in charity shops. I like to own what I've read so only use the library for a travel book if I'm going somewhere or reference books. They are great for kids books though, especially picture books for younger kids.

    Philip Roth fans

I have only read two - Portnoy's Complaint (very good but possibly more appealing to men) and The Plot Against America (loved it). I buy most of my books in charity shops and have a couple more Roth's on my TBR pile. After The Plot... am saving them for a special treat.
