The film (starring Viggo Mortenson as the man) hasn't been released yet. It was slated for this fall, but it got pushed back. I would look for it in early 2009. I can't wait for it! :)
The most recent books I bought were "A Walk In The Woods" by Bill Bryson and "1776" by David McCullough, but they were Christmas gifts for my mother and father respectively. I'd like to read them, too, someday haha.
I would definitely recommend it. I recently read it for the first time (who cares if it's an Oprah book? It is first and foremost a McCarthy book). It had me gripped so well that I had some fears turning the pages to see what would happen next. McCarthy's style of writing is a bit strange to get...
My nieces participate in something similar called Dolly Parton's Imagination Library, or something along those lines. I think it's awesome! They get a free book by mail every month.
I agree with this. I couldn't even make it through that book. I don't know what I hated more: Heart of Darkness or Crime and Punishment. Maybe it was the fact that I was forced to read them for school... but they made me want to tear my hair out!
I liked the Twilight series at first too, but...
I picked up The Three Musketeers at the library and I couldn't put it down after. I laughed so hard! What a great book. The Count of Monte Cristo is on my "on deck" list, and I plan on reading it soon. :)
I was forced to read it for school in 11th grade. I didn't think it was dreadful, but I was so deflated at the end because it is so depressing and dark. I definitely plan on re-reading it sometime so I can fully appreciate it!
I personally enjoyed Pillars. If there were any historical inaccuracies, I certainly missed them. I'm not too sharp with my medieval history, so it doesn't bother me one bit. I wasn't looking to analyze it, I was just looking for an entertaining story, and I got one. :)
A couple I can think of off the top of my head:
- Great Expectations (My friends and I had way too much fun with this book. We "illustrated" it and wrote an alternate ending. This was in 8th grade.)
- The Red Badge of Courage
- The Diary of Anne Frank
- A Christmas Carol
- Things Fall Apart
