When my children were young, we didn't have a TV. So I planned nap time around Hitchhiker on the radio. It wasn't until years later that I saw video version. I still love the animated book - the bugblatter beast going after the vorgon's grandmother... BTW vorgon poetry and peril chromatic...

Have you read Wyrms by OS Card? His Ender stuff gets all the press (and it deserves it), but I loved this book. Though it has nothing whatsoever to do with cats... But I remember it having the same feel as Morgaine. Don't as why.
I found it! The Sholan Alliance is a series by Lisanne Norman. Cat-like aliens come to earth and one of the teams with a telepath. If this isn't it I give up.

I found it! I think. I haven't read this series, but it seems promising - The Sholan Alliance by Lisanne Norman. The only problem is that the first book was published in 1993. Maybe you read it as a tweenager...
I haven't read the Rusalka series, but I devoured the Morgaine Chronicles.
Could it be the Doona series by McCaffrey? Haven't read them... the synopsis of the first one doesn't seem promising, but maybe a later one is it. But, you know, I seem to remember your book as well and now I'm obsessed. I shall look further. It's either that or work!
Definitely not the Chanur series, they never come to Earth - the series is set in the great space beyond...
The cat people coming to earth sounds very intriguing! Must research this.
Barbara Hambly's Those Who Hunt The Night and Traveling With The Dead are great and I suspect you might have heard of them as she is one of the biggies... But one that you might not have heard of and one that I found a fantastic read is Raven by S. A. Swiniarski. Totalling gripping from start...
