    Lost: Season 6

I watched it a few hours ago.... give me some time to think about it. Tentative thumbs up.

    Lost: Season 6

    Agreed. were really cute.

    Lost: Season 6

That's what the smoke monster thinks, but the Smoke Monster also does not believe that the island is special. I find this attitude of his to be quite unreasonable, since he has the ability to TURN INTO A SMOKE MONSTER. I take your point about it being too late in the show to have an episode...

    Lost: Season 6

OK, sure, but remember when Locke had the vision of the beechcraft in season 1? After that he just knew where to find the drug runner plane. And then when he went into the steam hut drug thing in season 3, and after that he just knew where to find Mr Eko. Then, later, John saw the way the sun...

    Lost: Season 6

What did people think about the most recent episode? I liked it, but the internet seems to disagree with me. I thought the acting was perhaps not the best that's ever been in Lost, but I liked the story and most of the explanations it offered were reasonably satisfying. It was probably the most...

    The Greek debt crisis

I think the austerity measures are there to cut back on government spending. The reason for this is so that the massive levels of debt can be bought under control. Without a currency of their own this is really the only lever the government has to control the economy. As far as I know they are...

    Lost: Season 6

Yeah, fair enough, but I still think there were other things wrong with that scene. Going without Lost this week is sort of good. Think of it as training for going without Lost, forever.

Who's your favorite FEMALE fantasy/sf writer?

I find Ayn Rand's books to be quite interesting. She posits a world where implausible and discredited hard libertarian economics actually works. Her exploration of this world seems quite ham-fisted and banal, but the idea itself is outrageous enough to be intriguing.

    Twitter

Yeah, I think that's very true. But, you know, the ways in which people interact with other people is always expanding, and it's not to the detriment of pre-existing means of communication (unless the new technology is better in every way, like how the telephone completely replaced the...

    Twitter

I am inclined to agree with all of that. The people that I know who think that Twitter and instant messaging are destroying the English language don't know enough about books like The Language Instinct to know that it would be impossible to destroy the English Language. I find trying to...

    Twitter

I'm curious to know how the people here feel about Twitter? I haven't really gotten into it very much. From what little I've seen it seems sort of fun. I've noticed that people who like books are likely to think that Twitter means the death of the English language. Do you agree with that? If...

    What should I read next?

Great Expectations is probably my favourite Charles Dickens, one of the few of his books I think is actually worth the read. I haven't read any of the others but have had Rebecca recommended to me by someone I know. She has a pretty decent taste in books.

    Stephenie Meyer

I'm not that keen on Romeo and Juliet or Pride and Prejudice, so, like, whatever. But waaaaah! Why did they have to wreck Wuthering Heights?!?!

    Lost: Season 6

I throught the episode was pretty good. HOW WILL THIS HELP ANYONE, DESMOND?!?! CONNECTION?!?!?! Probably. Also I hope everyone noticed that the book Hurley found, the one with the Russian title, was Notes From Underground by Dostoevsky. Yet another addition to the Lost book...

    Günter Grass: The Tin Drum

I've read that. It's pretty weird.

    George Eliot

That's OK. Mill on the Floss really grew on me after I finished it, and it's far from her best work. I've always found she is an author who takes a lot of effort. I just started Romola and, not only am I dealing with the denseness of her writing style, but she is making all these references...

    George Eliot

I remember thinking that with the beginning of Mill on the Floss, too. Because the characters are children it had difficulty keeping my attention. But, you know, they grow up. I also have serious issues with the ending of Mill on the Floss, which I won't discuss in case you ever make it there...
