Gene Wolfe Book of the New Sun series
one of the few books that I thought was so bad that I didn't finish
some people love it, but I couldn't handle his writing style
I'm new to this forum, but haven't seen this author mentioned so far: "Eragon" by Christopher Paolini. I was very impressed by the fact that the author was a teenager. It's not complex like Martin or Goodkind, but I thought it was a good read.
If you are just getting into SF, you might try some of the classics-
Dune series by Frank Herbert
Foundation series by Issac Asimov
Rama series by Arthur C. Clarke
Ringworld series by Larry Niven
Heechee series by Frederick Pohl

M&O is correct- the answer is told in "A Clash of Kings". I just finished reading all 3 since I thought the next book was coming out in April. Check the last paragraph of the 2nd to last Theon chapter (page 610 in the paperback).
