Advice on Stephen Donaldson - Gap Series

Gap series - awesome :D But ... not really the sort of SF that I would recommend to someone who wasn't already a keen fan of the genre.

    Military Sci-Fi

I suggest you try Gordon R Dickson's Dorsai novels, I think the first one is Tactics of Mistake. Jerry Pournelle has also written some highly enjoyable military SF with a leaning towards infantry, from memory: Prince of Mercenaries, Falkenberg's Legion, Prince of Sparta, Go Tell The Spartans.

    Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat

Whilst they are pretty much stand alone, I would recommend that you start either with "The Stainless Steel Rat" (the first one written) or "A Stainless Steel Rat Is Born" (the first chronologically). That way you'll get a better feel for the main character than if you just dive in at random...

Hmm, I see this George R R Martin chappie popping up quite a bit ... tell me about him  *adopts attentive pose*

    Lord Foul's Bane

Fair enough ... I'm hardly one to talk, I'm still wading through the execrable rubbish that is the Wheel of Time :( He is laughing at me, churning out pure nonsense, knowing that I will read it because I've got this far so I might as well finish! I hate him! *insert profanity here*

    favorite fantasy author

To be honest most of the fantasy that I have read in the last few years has left me cold. I'm fed up with seeing the same old formula rehashed time after time  Having said that, I'm always on the lookout for something new and engaging, so I'd welcome any recommendations for books that...

    Lord Foul's Bane

I'm quite surprised that the last two comments have been so negative - I found the Covenant books entriguing and compelling, and I have a low tolerance for most of the pap that is peddled as fantasy these days. I'm sure that I have recommended the books to at least 10 people over the years and I...

    Space opera fans...

I thoroughly enjoyed the Nights Dawn trilogy, but I reckon that Fallen Dragon is even better. Really looking forward to Pandora's Star. Whilst I am a huge fan of hard SF and the associated techno babble, there is also a lot of great SF that sidelines the techie stuff in order to concentrate...

    Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat

Phil, your speedy response was impressive - thanks :D

    Lord Foul's Bane

If the rape scene in Lord Foul's Bane bothered you, then I advise you to stay away from Gap Into Conflict: The Real Story ... Having said that, the Gap books are easily some of my favourites - full of anti-heroes of course, but then that's his bag, baby. I loved the Chronicles...

    Chasam City

Chasm City is certainly a very different type of book to Revelation Space, but I personally found it to be just as entertaining. Less in the classic space opera vein with a much more claustrophobic feel. However, I would agree with Litany - if you enjoyed Revelation Space then you should...

    Harry Harrison: Stainless Steel Rat

I'm tempted to re-read the Stainless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison for a bit of light relief. :o The first time through I read them in the order in which they were published, but this time I'd like to read them in series chronological order, i.e. start with A Stainless Steel Rat Is...
