Who is your favourite author, and why?

In which case, you will love Bruno:) Just finished the 5th - The Devil's Cave - and the last for now. While I will pick up the next one whenever it is out, I must confess to a little disappointment in this one. It feels like the same amount of butter is being used now for more and more...

have you guys read an e-book

My 2011 Kindle works very well in bright sunlight, so I am surprised at this comment. I pads and other devices with LCD screens get washed out, but not the e ink reader tech Kindles. I can't wait to try the latest Kindle that should work just as well in low/no light situations, when the existing...

Who is your favourite author, and why?

You are welcome:) There is a lot of information written into the books. Truffles, Wines, Rugby, Foie Gras, Horses, Dogs, French involvement in Algeria and Vietnam, ETA and the Basque separatist movement...and plenty more. The French love their food, and in the book it seems that there is...

Who is your favourite author, and why?

Recent new find, and one of the best I have read in recent crime fiction. Martin Walker and his Bruno series. Set in the Dordogne region in France, the books are like a mix of Peter Mayle's books about Provence and the cozy British country side detective novels. 5 books in the series thus far...

    Kindle Paperwhite announced

If it works as advertised, it should work a lot better for the application. The backlit LCD gets washed out under bright light or sunlight. And LCD screens aren't as easy on the eye as the Kindle e ink display. Watching a LCD panel - TV, computer, iPad, it isn't easy to fall asleep right away...

Old time classics turned into modern movies

Good idea for a new thread, I think. I haven't seen Alice, and I can't think of any other examples, top of my head. Why don't you start a new thread?:)

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

A very good example of movies being a lot better than the book.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

All his books are story collections, very fine ones. They are also now available in Omnibus format, three books or so in one large volume.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

I recently re-read Herriott after years, and they read well even now. Haven't heard about the two authors you mention, though I am familiar with Robinson and Booth. I will look up the first two on Amazon. A new mystery/crime/detective author is always welcome. I am currently reading my first...

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

No, they are all roughly the same size. It takes me about two months:) They aren't fast reads, the language is to be savoured. But they take you into a world of sailing ships and life at sea. Very enjoyable.

Who is your favourite author, and why?

So many to choose from, this is a very small sample from my favourites in the fiction category: Patrick O'Brian: for combining literature quality writing with the Nelsonian Navy at war Philip Kerr: For writing classy detective noir in the background of WW2 Germany Sharon Penman: For bringing...

    Can kids read too much?

I wouldn't worry about them reading too much. I would definitely worry about them spending too much time before the TV, video games and the internet. Or texting on handhelds.

    e-Books Vs normal books..

Check out Kindle. Much better than the Ipad for books, and a lot easier on the eye. An avid reader all my life, it took me just a couple of minutes to get comfortable with a Kindle, in terms of eyestrain it is as good or as bad as any real book. There is nothing like the smell and feel of a...

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

If by genre, you mean Fantasy, I don't much care for it, LOTR is the shining exception. I like my fiction to be grounded in some reality, even if it is history. I read the early HP books, but it seemed to me that they doubled in size as they went along, and grew tedious. Another movie/book...

What's the best opening line of a book (fiction or non)?

I too did not know this was an old thread. Nice reading, and yes, the opening sentences from Rebecca, A Tale of two Cities, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice are memorable indeed. So are those from Bleak House, Dickens writing about the London Fog. I haven't the book at hand, sadly, and it is too...

[Request] Help me find more books!

One of the best fantasy books ever is the Lord of the Rings. It will take some patience to get through the first 100 pages, but if you can do that, you will be hooked.

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

I am afraid Harry Potter doesn't appeal to me. It felt too much like a Rings for children to me, so I gave up on the books and the movies. Forrest Gump on the other hand, brilliant movie with the dependable Mr Hanks. There is also a double album CD with all the songs heard just in passing in...

What's the best opening line of a book (fiction or non)?

Memorable first sentences from books One line that always comes to me is the one from Ken Follet's The Pillars of the Earth: The small boys came early to the hanging. I was hooked:) Other candidates, anyone?

Do You Think Books Turned Into Movies Do It Justice?

That is almost always the case. In some cases the movie isn't a lot worse, but often, that is the case. One movie that was as good - maybe even better - than the book for me was the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But even then, the extended blu ray version. The theatrical one was just ok. I can't...
