    "The Girl Who Owned a City" by O.T. Nelson, maybe? Lots of books with this theme, but I vaguely remember the broken leg incident in this one (I think!).

    It's a William Sleator book, I'm fairly sure. Just found it on amazon.com: Singularity. "Sixteen-year-old twins Harry and Barry stumble across a gateway to another universe, where a distortion in time and space causes a dramatic change in their competitive relationship."

    Children's Fantasy Book (I'm pulling my hair out about this!)

    Hi Anna, I think you may be remembering "Locked in Time" by Lois Duncan. It's in print so you should be able to get a nice description of it on amazon.com.

    Looking for a folk tale

    Think it may be Epaminondas? Possibly Sara Cone Bryant, Epaminondas and his Auntie. The text is online here. There are newer editions, too, including a new Politically Correct picture book called Epossumondas by Janet Stevens. :rolleyes:
