    Brian Jacques: Redwall

I love the first three, Redwall, Mossflower and Mattimeo, but they all get a bit samey after that, hero goes on quest while everyone else stays at home and fights enemy trying to take over etc etc... Jacques has imo never found a bad guy as bad as Cluny from the first book, so I kind of lost...

William Golding: Lord Of The Flies

I might be wrong on this as it's ages since I read it, but I think the beast was literally the dead body of the pilot entangled in his parachute, but only Simon actually finds this out. It must be metaphorical as well, the idea of worshipping a beast and 'the Lord of the Flies' being another...

Harry Potter Seventh Book Pre-Sales Speculations and Discussions

Absolutely, I think dying for the greater good and sacrificing himself for others is the noble sort of death that a character like Dumbledore deserves. I was mad at first too, but I think we'll appreciate his sacrifice when we find out what happens in the last book...

    Enid Blyton

I loved Enid Blyton as a kid, especially The Enchanted Wood/Faraway Tree ones. She also has an 'adventure ' series which was my favourie ('The Castle/ Island/River/Circus of Adventure etc), but nobody I know seem to remember those ones. To be honest I did find some of her character portrayals...

Harry Potter Seventh Book Pre-Sales Speculations and Discussions

I can't see her endorsing talented kids dropping out either, not just Harry but Hermione, as she's already offered to go with Harry. Maybe they can repeat the year so that Rowling can squeeze another book deal out of the series ;) I don't think Harry will become DADA teacher immediately, but...

    Top 20 Geek Novels

I've read and enjoyed the top 4 - oh well must be a geek :)

Kate Long: The Bad Mother's Handbook

Aw bless it, I didn't think it was bad:D I thought it started well, the horrible teenage 'sex' scenes made me laugh. You're right though, the end was crap. And it looks like her new book is pretty much the same plot...

why did you join the book forum?

I come here when I'm looking to buy new books and I'm looking for inspiration, there's always some interesting debate going on.... Though it was TBF that introduced me to Dan Brown for better or worse....

    S.E. Hinton: The Outsiders

I read it in school as well , and loved it, think there's something in there every teenager can relate to. I liked the movie as well, but more for it's pure cheesiness rather than its merit as a film, the 'rumble' which is a great scene in the book was hilarious in the movie, more a comedy mud...

Audrey Niffenegger: The Time Traveler's Wife

Mmmm, Shade, all good points, I had the same problems with Henry and his unprovoked violence . I also wondered why it was called 'The Time Traveller's Wife' when Henry seems to be the one with the most control in the realtionship.... You've given me a lot to think about, I'll have to go and...

    Irvine Welsh: Trainspotting

I liked the ending, it was good to have some optimism after so much misery and violence; it made me feel better that somebody escaped....

Harry Potter Seventh Book Pre-Sales Speculations and Discussions

I reckon he'll return at the end as an adult and become the only Defence against the dark arts teacher that can stick it out for more than a year :)

    Joseph Heller: Closing Time

I loved Catch-22 but totally hated Closing Time and couldn't get to the end of it. I just felt that the end of Catch-22 was so phenomenal and fitting, and then you find out what happens to Yossarrian and it was such a cop-out that I felt let down. I liked the idea that he'd 'jumped' and would...

Audrey Niffenegger: The Time Traveler's Wife

I cried at the end too, I thought that was beautifully done, and I agree with Isabell, I think it's the love story that's important in this case not the time-travelling. It did die a little in the middle, but I think the ending more than made up for it. And is it not being made into a film soon...

    Irvine Welsh: Trainspotting

I loved Trainspotting because it was so raw and close to the bone. I lived in an area of Scotland like that when I was a student, and have come across people like Begbie and the mentality of 'he's evil but he's a mate so what can you do?' that his 'friends' share. It's also the only book that...

Mitch Albom: The Five People You Meet In Heaven

I too liked this book, but wasn't blown away by it. I found the author's idea of the afterlife a little claustrophobic, I've always liked the idea that there's something 'bigger' out there, and it just seemed too ordinary. But that's more my personal prejudice than the fault of the book, so...

    Monica Ali: Brick Lane

I read this book recently and just couldn't take to it. I just couldn't shake the feeling that the range of themes it dealt with were a contrivance to win book awards, because the book should have given me important questions to consider in terms of racism, religion, arranged marriage etc, but...

    Glen Duncan: I, Lucifer

Oh I see, fair enough :D I personally don't think it could though, I think Lucifer should offend. There are a number of things Duncan's Lucifer says that are upsetting, but I expected them so wasn't offended as such, and he does make some very valid points about sin and human nature which...

    Glen Duncan: I, Lucifer

I believe in God too, but you can't really expect Lucifer, prince of darkness, destroyer of worlds epitome of evil etc etc to be a nice bloke. He has to revel in evil, it's part of the job description. It's not gratutious, and besides, its seriously bloody funny :)

    Glen Duncan: I, Lucifer

I agree with everything Martin said, loved this book and think the devil would be the type to rant and hold a grudge. :) Some of the human aspects really got to me, like the woman buying the keyring from the deaf and dumb woman, that is quite painful to read because i've probably treated people...
