I am currently reading "Holy Guacamole" and it's... well... different. It's sort of amusing... and I like the recipe aspect of it but I don't like the characters much or how Fairbanks switches perspectives for a half a page for almost no reason. Also, I read a part today that went something like...
... working in an Australian bakery - once again, how ironic! Now I won't starve and I can be around the Australian owners for a bit of a reminder of home. YAY!
I am a very happy girl!
Now as sad as it may seem, I have a great love for gratuitous violence, kinky sex without violence, gore, blood, etc. Way out there stuff (only the evening news makes me squirmish and weepy).
Now Richard, who sells me most of my books has been trying to freak me out for years now. This book...
Wow! What a book! Written by Ian Denys Peek.
It's about his tale as a POW building the Burma-Thailand railroad. Fitting to have finished it today as it is ANZAC Day here.
Has anyone else read this? If so, what did you think?
I thought it amazing that he could make me laugh when...
Finishing Tokyo. Have read The Treatment and Birdman. She's VERY interesting! A female writing about these sort of topics, the brutality, the chaos... used to that in male authors.
What do you think?
How do you order the hard to find books? I have tried abe, alibris, amazon, bookkoob, etc. There HAS to be a copy of it somewhere! What ways do you use when needing the hard-to-find book?
Hi. I've been in Australia for so long that I've forgotten whether or not the word "dag" is used elsewhere. If so, what are the uses.
Dag - "lock of wool clotted with dung about the hinder parts of sheep" and "extraordinary or amusing person".
Also, in our household and amongst our...
Hi all! Well, I bumped into this author when reading a write-up on another author. I've asked two friends and they both said he's a crappy writer. Let me know what you think. Also, if there is one I should read to realise why he's one way or another, let me know! Ta.
Hi bookies. Ok. "My Sister's Keeper" by Jodi Piccoult. It's the next book for my book club. I've yet to read it but I've heard everything from "I loved it! That's why I suggested it to Book Club" to "Here, you can have the damn book! I couldn't get past page 65". The story has been ruined for me...
I've read 2 of his books, "Anyone you want me to be" and "Obsession". It's difficult at times to read biographies, especiallty about serial killers as there are so many characters in the peripheral.
Anyone recommend a biographical writer as good as John Douglas?
A few days ago, I finished reading "The Perfec Husband" by Lisa Gardner. I knew I had read one of her books before, but it had magically disappeared from my bookcase. I see in one of my booklovers catalogue that she's written a new book. I buy this used one... it really, really sucked! Romantic...
I just finished another one of his books... one in the Scudder series. I like his books because the stories are great, the titles interesting, the conversations vibrant and what easy, easy reading! Cotton candy (fairy floss) for the mind!
Anyone else read his books? He's been writing for...
This was a fantastic resource or guide about mental health! Anyone have any others that they can recommend? I would like a book that deals a lot with adolescent mental health. Thanks.
Hi all! A new bibliophile here, ready to type/read about books on this site until I get fired... I'd start doing it at home. Staying up at all hours, either reading or typing/reading about what I've read. Fun!
I am enjoying you all enormously already and look forward to more!
I LOVE Christopher Fowler! He's a British writer. He has a fantastic sense of humour and of the absurd. His books are classified fantasy/horror/crime. He's prolific and his loathing of the class systems comes through really well in his writing.
I haven't seen anyone mention him yet but if...
