How do you arrange your bookshelves?

Organising books takes time away from reading books. That said, I try to organise the shelves every time I move or set up a new bookcase. At the moment I have 4... three in the living room with books that kind of fit into place, and one in the bedroom for cramming stuff I'm reading at the...

Ann Brashes: The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants

I've never read it, but my fiancee (who is Colombian and only learned English a couple years ago) read it over the summer, and as a result really got into reading English books. She really liked it.

    Your spouse/significant other's reading habits

Reading puts a strain on my relationship with my fiancee. Several reasons for the added strain - the cost, the sheer number of books, and the fact it's time away from her. Plus the fact I take a book to walk down the stairs, and another to eat supper, and anothe to watch TV, and never put...

i want to speed my reading

I probably read at about an average pace, or slightly faster. My brother reads much faster than me. That said, I get through more books than him - the secret? I just spend more time reading.

What book should be REQUIRED reading for everyone?

What I recall from school and my failure to read assigned material (although I read a ton of unnassigned material) was that more than the books, I hated the monotony of the lessons and the stupidity of the testing. It's not the books, it's the teacher. Do a good job teaching and it doesn't...

    Audio books.

There's a discount audio store right by my house which I keep meaning to visit... The only ones I've listened to recently are work related - a series on sales and the book Good to Great. They're good, but I don't think I'd listen to fiction. I remember listening to some fantasy books on...

Ever broken up with someone over books?

I've never had to, and if the marriage gods smile upon me never will, but I certainly understand why you would break up with someone over books. It's not just a normal hobby for most of the people in this forum, certainly not for myself - it's a devotion. If I spent as much money and time on...

Do you judge a book by its cover?

If there's absolutely no interest in the book on my part, I won't buy because of a cover. However, there is no question that if there are two versions of a books I would like to buy priced at around the same value, I will choose based on which one has the nicer cover (well, I would also...

Do you have a preference for publishers?

When you're strolling through a bookstore, do you notice your eye coming back again to a familiar publisher or line of books? For instance, I find that I don't usually go wrong picking up some of the more obscure stuff in the Modern Library Classics collection (not the instantly recognisable...

    Literature Survey - Help Appreciated!

Same boat as Novella, can only remember some of what I read. I know, for instance, that I absolutely loved an existentialist play we read in French class, but for the life of me I can remember neither the author nor the title. Enjoyed Hamlet MacBeth Julius Caesar The Catcher in the Rye...

    Literary Item from The Onion

The Onion is satire Halo. I am willing to bet that describes a lot of people here, to a certain extent. Or maybe that's just wishful thinking, hoping I'm not the only one with that problem. :)

    I just finished reading...

Just finished reading Built To Last: Successful habits of visionary companies by Jim Collins and Jerry I. Porras. I picked it up at the 3 for 20$ section of my favourite bookstore, but I wasn't expecting all that much out of it. Boy was I surprised. One of the best business books I've ever...

    blind buying!!

Terry Pratchett for instant purchase of hardcovers. For other blind buying, I have no issue with it whatsoever, provided the price isn't obscene. I buy more books than I know what to do with, and 90% of them aren't on any kind of "to buy" list.

    The Book-buying Experience... :)

Like many people who've posted here, I prefer small bookstores. In particular, I like used bookstores (or ones that carry both new and used). The main reason I like small bookstores is that the management is willing to create relationships with their customers, to bargain with us, to spend...

    Bargains

Best bargain I've found was in a bookstore I frequent that is only open on weekends. I happened to wander in and find (through sheer luck) a 6 volume set of Casanova's memoirs in hardcover, in fairly good condition. Only 40 bucks canadian. The guy at the cash was surprised at the low price...

    Your favorite position

Favourite position is probably lying face down on my bed, preferably late into the night or in the early morning. But I'll pretty much read anywhere, so it's not a particularly important preference. I also love reading while I eat (though that does lead to me ruining a lot of my books). The...

    Quirks, Habits & Superstitions

My main thing is that with any hardcover books I NEED to remove the slip before I start reading the book (typically with those glossy covers, though I do the same with cloth and normal paper). I just can't stand reading books with external bindings. Even when it looks better with than without...

How many books have you read in 2005?

Not counting the several books I've read and abandoned... :) The Cluetrain Manifesto - Christopher Locke + some other guys Why I Write (and some other essays) - George Orwell The Five Dysfunctions of a Team - Lencioni (good for a damn business book) On the Road - Jack Kerouac Byline...

A cookbook you couldn't put down?

As far as actual cooking reference goes, I've found that the only cookbook you really need (well, and possibly a culinary dictionary - Webster's has a good one) is La Repertoire de la Cuisine (The Cookery Repetory). No pictures and detailed explanations are few, but it is simply the best...

    Assigned Reading

On the one hand, I'd agree with what appears to be the majority of you in that being forced to read a work will typically result in my not enjoying it. In my case, being that I am a pretty poor student if I don't really enjoy the subject, that led to me not reading the assigned material about...
