I buy most of my books from half.com or from a used book store here in Austin. If I have a gift card then I'll go to B&N or Borders but only if I have a giftcard.
I keep a list online of what I've read: http://www.nicole2112.com/books This has the books by year. The current list is what I've read this year so far, then there are links on the left hand side of 2002 and 2001 books. There is also my "to be read" list. Those are books that I currently own...
I'm sorry I don't have any suggestions except for "The Outsiders" (which is a gang book actually) which has already been suggested above. Judy Bloom or Beverly Cleary is another good suggestion. Bless you though for taking the time to care for this girl. Good luck.
I could read a 500 page book in about 5/6 days. Assuming I wanted to finish it. I don't waste my time with books that aren't holding my attention or entertaining me. I read purely for entertainment and fun. If it's work - I put it down. I get paid to work. :)

My daughter made me a bookmark about 3 years go. It's red with stickers on it and then it's laminated. I've used it ever since.
It's sad to see corners that have been folded down or a book that has been written on. They just seem so fragile to me, to write in it seems wrong.
Like some of the other members, I too "free" my books when I have read them. I either swap books with someone else at Bookcrossing.com or I just leave them someplace for someone else to pick up. Sometimes the person that picks the book up will go to Bookcrossing.com to make a journal entry on...
