Ever broken up with someone over books?

And that was why in my toxic bachelor days I dropped that poor princeton girl...it does't require a mirror of all of your interests but connections of the intellect are a must for one to persist past the joy of a roll in the hay (or 20). She's no doubt moved on to better things and probably...

Which Dan Brown To Read First?

That is funny. Probably just as well the Brown fans didn't engage. I've read 2 of his books and can see why some people like them, but wish readers wished for more. They're like a film novelization at best. A hollywood summer blockbuster film. Oh well. Guess the DB sales will hopefully...

    Worst or most disappointing book?

This book is totally overratted. I see it causing all kinds of problems!

Cormac McCarthy: No Country For Old Men

TTT This is a fine novel. I loved Blood Meridian. I found the Border Trilogy a bit soft. We're back in dark places with this. There is a lot of violence, but it is used as a window into the human condition, much as with BM. Run out and pick up this book.

    Depression and Readers

There has been much noted on the tendency of creative people to suffer from depression (or for depressive people to be creative?) which may support a connection between authors and the condition. However, I wonder if any of you fellow posters have any thoughts about whether there might be a...

    Martin Amis

He's a very talented bastard, though. Maybe a library visit? (So as not to be economically bound?)

Ever broken up with someone over books?

Yes, but if you dream of Barney's department store, buying $700 heels and won't give a dollar to a homeless person because you "won't support" his "life choice" you may be borderline insane :D

    Forum Temperature: Future of literature?

Joan Didion is among my favorites. I like you more and more...even as I repulse you with my odorous bile...

    Martin Amis

Ah...how to explain. Not violent, just in touch with the contradictions of the human mind. A certain honesty. I would say the same of Voltaire. I don't enjoy "horror" at all. However, I find some of the things we do to those we love, the things we pursue with abandon, sometimes more...
