Character Names give me a headache!!

You can try looking though an Asian phone book, or an on line directory with a lot of Asian members.

    Word count - anybody published?

You might want to do a little more research. Adding detail will increase the word count and add verisimilitude. You could also start the story earlier: turn it into a story of three generations of a family instead of just one character. You can also try adding scenes from minor character's...

No, but I do hope that someday I can write something that as many people talk about as "There are mother#$%$ing snakes on this mother#$%$ing plane."

Personally, I'd love to discuss the artistic merits of: "There are mother#$%$ing snakes on this mother#$%$ing plane."

Suggestions: October 2006 Book of the Month

The longest threads here is Lolita, so obviously people like books that are a little kinky. How about "Of Human Bondage" ;) From amazon.com "The modern writer who has influenced me the most." - George Orwell "One of my favourite writers." - Gabriel Garcia Marquez "A writer of...

    Input?

I recommend you try it. I enjoyed receiving checks from a magazine. I doubt that I would’ve felt a stronger sense of accomplishment by giving a vanity publisher my credit card number, but I can't say for certain. I've never paid anyone to publish my work. Like you said, I live in another...

    Input?

That if his book is "really good" like he claims, and if it entertains an audience, he could find a publisher who would pay him to publish it. That would solve his problem of not having 10 grand, no?

    Input?

My bad. I thought sirmyk was referring to professionally written “mainstream fiction.” Maybe you can help me stay on topic in the future. How were you able to deduce that smiryk was referring to amateur “mainstream fiction” written “with money on the brain?”

    Input?

Professional: engaged in an occupation as a paid job rather than as a hobby. By definition, you can't be a "professional" writer unless you make money writing. I don't see a problem with that. If you write something entertaining, people will probably be willing to pay for it. If not, they...

    Serial killer novels?

Sorry if I offended you. You said you were interested. I thought you'd want to know where to find more information. But if this is what you're looking for: “have been following the interwoven threads of Klein and masochism with interest. A curious thing about Klein is that she almost...

    Serial killer novels?

Or stop reading. Like I said, getting inside a killer's mind seems interesting, but once you get there, the reality can be nauseating, even when the information is presented clinically. I'd certainly be happy if we switched to a more pleasant subject.

    Serial killer novels?

Try google: Hitler's niece or Geli Raubal Google gives 79,800 results for Hitler and masochism. Strange. I copied two phrases that specifically mention his masochism. “Hitler projected his own masochistic ego (his wish for death) onto the Jew.” And “as the masochist he really is,”...

    Serial killer novels?

Hitler had a combination of sadism/masochism and necrophilia, which are sexual perversions. Many clinical psychologists have linked his sexual perversions to his Anti Semitism. (I’ve highlighted his “vicarious pleasure from the suffering of others” ) A Psychological Analysis of Adolph...

    Serial killer novels?

He sexually abused his own niece. When she tried to leave, he wouldn't let her. She killed herself rather than spend another second with him.

    Serial killer novels?

I'm saying that a clinical psychologist diagnosed Hitler as being a sadist. And that the dictionary defines sadism as: "The deriving of sexual gratification or the tendency to derive sexual gratification from inflicting pain on others." And that, without context and empathy for his...

    Serial killer novels?

According to William Shirer, in his famous work The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich... Adolf's love affair with his niece. "In the summer of 1928, Hitler aged 39, was the Nazi party leader, and he fell in love with Geli Raubal, his 20 year old niece, the daughter of his widowed half-sister...

    The Counterculture Canon

It was very big of you to admit that maybe you didn't name things properly. I'll admit that I've read “Catcher”, “Zen.." and “Fear and Loathing”. I didn't realize the philosophical similarities until you brought it up, so you’re definitely on to something interesting.

    Serial killer novels?

I will conceed that a writer can do whatever the heck they want, if they don't expect readers to care. IMO, however, in good fiction, readers care about the characters.
