This sounds like a conflation of several of the Noel Streatfield books about orphan children being brought up by various odd relatives or guardians. "Ballet Shoes" and "Theatre Shoes" (which has been renamed recently to fit in with the other titles) have similar plots, but in "Ballet Shoes"...
I often re-read, there is always something new to find in a good book.
My "comfort" re-reads used to be the Narnia books when I was a child, now I always enjoy "Three Men In a Boat" which never fails to make me laugh. I also love "Diary of a Nobody" which is also always funny.
I found the descriptions of the smells disgusting. I have a very sensitive nose and some of it made me feel sick. Not because the smelly things were disgusting in themselves, but the idea that he could spy and stalk people by smell was horrible. I found his character not just unbelievable...
That's brilliant. We have a super organic farm near us so we are lucky. They sell free-range, organic meat and organic vegetables and groceries. (These may be free-range too, but I don't think they range far!)

The Rockingdown Mystery - Enid Blyton for 99p.(A favourite book from childhood which my mother threw out when I got too old for it! It is dreadful but I liked it.)
The Celtic Tradition - Caitlin Matthews for £1.99. and
Tigana - Guy Gavriel Kay from an...

I have recently been trying out books from Amazon sellers. Sometimes it has been the easiest way to get OP books and sometimes they are amazingly cheap. I have been fortunate so...
Today I ordered from Amazon:
No Present Like Time - Steph Swainston - because I'm reading her first book and it's great.
We Need to Talk About Kevin - Lionel Shriver - not sure about this but am going to give it a try. (Why does she have a man's name?)
Enders Game - O.S. Card...
I read "Island" donkey's years ago, didn't like it as much as BNW. "Ape and Essence" is one of my favourites, it's rather odd but brilliant. I saw a dramatisation on TV many, many years ago and read the book.
Hi everyone,
Introducing myself, addeni. I'm in Devon, UK and have three children. I'll read anything except chicklit and war fiction. I have been a teacher and am now looking for some part-time work, in a library would be nice!
I have joined the forum just before I go away on holiday...
