    What College Students are Reading

I like watching everyone freak out about "kids these days" while forgetting that the majority of people (not just college students) have always been reading more low brow stuff than the kinds of books cited at the beginning of the article. Yeah, people on this forum probably had those...

    Help me feed my craving.

Yeah, I picked up Fortress of Solitude for now, and I'll definitely be picking up more of these recommendations in the near future. Thanks, guys!

    Help me feed my craving.

Thanks for all of the great recommendations. I've definitely got a few more things to add to my reading list. Yeah, I'm really just looking for a change from what I normally read, and I really feel like reading a character driven book. As far as the contemporary setting goes, I would prefer it...

    Help me feed my craving.

I love books focused on some far-fetched plotline or wonderful setting as much as the next guy, but I need a break. I thought it would be easy to find an alternative: a character focused book with a believable story. However, I was mistaken. I spent yesterday looking through books on Amazon...

    Why do boys hate reading?

I found an interesting article regarding the difference between boys and girls in reading from the University of North Carolina. However, one part was particualrly interesting: This struck a chord with me because I remember having one math teacher who specifically catered to the girls in the...

    Why do boys hate reading?

Here's my question, though: Do boys not read as much because there are less books for them, or are there less books for them because they don't read as much?

    Why do boys hate reading?

Perhaps I went too far by saying what I saw as their purpose, but I still feel that the reading curriculum is sometimes kept too shallow for too long.

    Why do boys hate reading?

Meh, the topic title is pretty big generalization, so I felt I had my oppurtunity ;). Anyway, I wasn't referring to the "A" student who dislikes reading, which I do remember, but just what I remember from girls in high school in general. Even girls that did not do exceptionally well in school...

An Age That Bends the Truth in a Million Little Ways

What seems to come up every time a person is caught in a lie is a more and more common belief, or at least defense, that there is no such thing as truth. I know it is a bit of a leap here, but it really doesn't surprise me in the least to see something like this when such attitudes to truth are...

    Why do boys hate reading?

The pattern I have noticed is that young girls may read more as a percentage, but few seem to be avid readers. Whereas, based solely on personal experience, the boys that read are avid readers. More of an all or nothing type of thing for boys from my experience. I do have one question though...

Turning your book passion into an occupation

The idea of opening a bookstore seems great: a nice little quaint place where you feature books that are somewhat obscure and perhaps have some kind of added relationship with customers. However, the business side of it is quite scary. Now more than ever, you would have to offer something far...

    Why do boys hate reading?

I'm interested to see how this all plays out because it essentially flips some long held assumptions about higher education. It will also be interesting to see if this statistic eventually carries over to the professional world.

    1984?

I believe I read it when I was 14. There was nothing in it that I remember being particularly hard to understand. However, I'm going to side with mehastings here: it's probably best to go along with your mom's wishes. I'm guessing that she has read the book and would know best what you are ready...

do you keep track of the books you read?

Sounds good except the date begun date finished thing would only serve to depress me. Blast my lack of focus and committment!

do you keep track of the books you read?

I'll definitely have to check that out. I remember another site trying to do the same thing a while back, but it had so many missing titles and such slow maintenaince that it was completely useless. Maybe this will finally be the DVD Aficionado for books.

    Competitive Reading

Personally, I set realistic goals for the number of books I want to read. For instance, perhaps I'll try to read at least a book a week. If I don't set some sort of broad goal up, I will inevitably find myself lagging behind or getting distracted with other trivial activities. I think that is...

do you keep track of the books you read?

I use a good old fashioned Text file to keep track of what books I've read. I make a new one each year with the intention of having the lists motivate me to read more, but instead the lists just remind me how much time I wasted not reading in the past year. I also have a spiral notebook where I...

hardback or softback books? Which do you prefer?

The majority of the time I read in my bed whether it's day or night.

    Umberto Eco: Foucault's Pendulum

It's great. All I kept hearing when i started it was how difficult it was and that you needed to have a dictionary handy, but it turns out that was all lies. It was one of the most enjoyable books i have read this year. The plot held my interest, and the writing was able to secure a firm grasp...

hardback or softback books? Which do you prefer?

I do cave when it is a book I'm looking forward to, and if I own one part of a series in a given format, I buy the rest in that format. Of course, I do sometimes regret being so anxious like with the Baroque Cycle. They really didn't live up to Cryptonomicon.
