    Do kids need summer vacation?

Nomadic Myth made a great point about saving $$. Here in OK we have a hard enough time funding education. There is no way the systems could afford to run air conditioning in all of those buildings when it's 110F outside. As both a dad and a student - there is a need for summer break.

    Graduate School, Research, Professor

No suggestions, but be encouraged. This past spring I went back to grad school at 35 with 4 kids and a business to run. It's possible and if you love what you are chasing, it doesn't even feel like work. Well, at least most of the time. I'm with you on wanting a job that corresponds to your...

    The Ice Man

If A and B came to pass (clues and rationality), most of the American media and a good deal of the government would be unemployed. Do you really want Greta "corpses in the streets" Van Sunasydgfdbfb;d to be forced to work at McD's? Half-cocked and hysterical is what made this country what it is...

Gabriel García Márquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude

I had some the same reactions. The language was beautiful and he seemed to be caught up in his characters. The portrait of each seemed very carefully done. It was as if GGM knew who the character had to be and took great pains to make them "right". That also might be why it felt slow in places...

Night time reading: Can you do it? Do you do it?

I do most of my reading after about 10PM. It's not unusual for me to read until 1 or after. With 4 kids, those are the only quiet hours we have.

    The Counterculture Canon

Are we only talking about fiction works? For a more recent work, what about a novel like Fight Club? The ideas and message are very anti / post consumer. Thoughts?

Lynne Truss: Eats, Shoots & Leaves

I found myself being suprised that I enjoyed this books as much as I did as I've never been much of a grammar nazi. She took a subject that could easily have invoked memories of our high school freshman English teachers and turned it into a fun read. I think grammar has been damaged more by...

    Paul Auster

I finished Oracle Night a couple of days ago and I would echo what Stewart wrote about it. I like the way Auster pays attention to detail, but at the same time keeps things moving. I never felt like anything was left out that I wanted to know, but I also didn't feel bogged down in superfluous...

Everything Bad is Good for You

I really enjoyed it. His ideas about the development of thinking and reasoning skills through video games and the need for more intricate plots in television and movies felt right on. At the same time, I didn't feel like he was completely rejecting literature and reading, just stating that these...

    Dean Koontz: The Taking

I wouldn't recommend The Taking as your first Koontz book. Velocity was good as was Odd Thomas for his more recent stuff. The Taking was OK, but I didn't find it indicative of the majority of his books. Whatever you choose, enjoy.

    Poll: Your boss

My boss has days of amazing competence and "goodness" and days of complete stupidity and I wonder why I put up with him. Then I realize I'm stuck with me.
