    Paul Theroux

    seems we may have some similar tastes in fiction. I have just remembered another book written in a similar vain to the ones above, Don't stop the Carnival, written by Herman Wouk. I'm about to read Boyd's newest book, Any Human Heart.....have you read it?

    The Most overrated fiction book ever?

    Think the general concensus is that (and I agree) Catcher in the Rye, The da Vinci code, LOTR and Catch22 are all over rated. I think Catcher is just some adolesant jibberish. The Da Vinci code ain't a bad read but has been taken far to seriously on the whole, it certainly is not well written...

    Iain Banks

    A fan of Banks and Neruda! good taste, don't suppose you listen to Tom Waits as well? On this thread, I have read all of Banks' non SF books and enjoyed all, however, I'm not much of an SF fan but realy enjoyed Use of Weapons, in fact I'd consider it one of his best.

    Yeah, I read Song of Kali, thought that was very good. Carrion Comfort was OK. Unfortunatly I can't remember the name of the other book, by DS, I read but it was about a retired astronaut trying to find himself, it was very intelligently written but a bit slow, completly different to the other...

    I recently read a book called stars and stripes by william boyd, it reminded me a lot of kowloon tong, you should give it a try, also john mortimer's book paradise prosponed. What is Hotel Honolulu like? same vain as KT?
