    abebooks

Abebooks do have an option to email the seller, when you get to the book details page. I did ask about one book where they replied and said it had already gone, but it's still on the system a year later. Most of my books have come from the US, and they usually email me when I order to see if I...

    New Sony e-Book Reader

There's a lot of good free stuff on the Web in PDF form, I've come across quite a few scientific articles and there's even some old out of copyright books I've scanned in myself. If the gadgets had a large colour display they could be very useful for reading these. :)

Questions from a new book collector

I suppose you'd have to find books that were not widely read when new, but will be in demand in the future, which could be difficult. Maybe narrowing it down to a subject in which you are very interested would be easier. I collect books on a particular subject, but then I expect to read them...

    abebooks

Yes, I've bought dozens of out of print books from abebooks.co.uk, which is the same but gives you prices in pounds and UK sellers first if you like. The only problem I've ever had is from a guy in Canada who forgot to post the book, but did so straight away when I mailed him. I've looked on...

    Windows error problem

A file in a FAT file system (default type) cannot be larger than 2 Gb, but I'm not sure what happens if you try to copy one from another device. To hold larger files requires re-formatting a disk as an NTFS file system (which deletes all the existing files). If the problem is in a single folder...

Discussion or a question: can lies or a bad ....

Maybe we need to believe "lies" in order to function. If I didn't recognise my car every time it had a tyre change it wouldn't be much use to me. It's probably time I made another attempt to understand The Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way.

Discussion or a question: can lies or a bad ....

Well, our minds contain many errors. For example we naturally see a flat world and the Sun flying above it, even if we "know" better. Then we might change our minds as to whether a person is good or bad, or beautiful or plain, even when they have not changed themselves. Many other perceptions...

What's wrong with the public library?

I used to read loads of library books when I was a kid; they let me have a ticket for the adult section when I was eleven and there were all sorts of strange books in there. I have since heard though that someone has been through many of them and crossed all the rude words out. The town and...

What other hobbies do you enjoy?

Walking in the country with the dogs (then looking up where we've been in old books ;) ), listening to noise, sometimes looking at the Moon through my telescope.

    On The Beach

Yeah, I read this in the 70s. Bad idea. Good book though.

    Bookcovers

They all look a bit modern to me. This is how they should be done. Thanks to ImageShack for Free Image Hosting

Why haven't all books been made into e-books?

I'd much rather have a real book, but e-books are a good way of sharing the older, out of copyright, works that are rare and expensive. I'm currently working on my first submission to Project Gutenberg so other people with the same interests can read it, and hopefully upload some of theirs in turn.

Books you were forced to read at school!

Great Expectorations wasn't too bad, at least it had a story and interesting characters, but did nobody else have to read Diary of a Fox-Hunting Man? It remains a mystery how a book about the Great War could contain so little excitement. All Quiet on the Western Front was miles better; I even...

    Rammstein

Thanks for the excellent reviews Stewart. You are making me think once again that I really should learn German some time. Actually this happens every time I buy an album in German, and it's getting a bit embarrassing now as I have 3 of Rammstein's, most of Laibach and Caspar Brotzmann Massaker...

    Little Britain

The TV mag had a photo of Dafydd in it, so I laughed at that and watched BBC 2 about Death Metal and Satanism instead. Mind you, the bit with the open minded Norwegian parents who had bought their 13 year old a guitar and large amplifier, could have passed for a Little Britain piece, as too the...

    How to Raise Readers

Just be careful how large - I bought a photo atlas of the Moon which at 27 lbs. nearly put my back out. Luckily it takes the form of punched sheets in a ring binder, so I've taken them all out and put them in a drawer.

None in specifice but looking for a book or 2 :)

I enjoy the English found in books of a hundred years ago. The Astronomy books in particular were often quite poetic, such as Curiosities of the Sky by G.P. Serviss (1909) or the extracts from several old Moon books I have posted Here.

    Books on living abroad

Not fiction, but Seven Years in Tibet was a good read.

Old National Geographics -- What to do with them?

On second thoughts, there's probably not much detail I don't already have in books, but I can point you to a US Astronomy forum if you like.

Old National Geographics -- What to do with them?

I have 1923-5 bound into volumes that I found in a used book shop, and even those weren't particularly expensive. I remember as a child having one with a fold out photo from Apollo 17, so would probably be from 1973. If you have many space articles in them (particularly the Moon) you could cut...
