    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Sorry, I’m not going to do that. I think Ell already gave some good insights into Iris’s character – and I'm not likely to improve on what she said. Also, I just don't think it would be worth the effort. I want to join in a discussion with a group - and that just isn't happening here...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I can still like a person - even if I don't like the choices they made. One thing I liked about Iris was her ability to be honest with herself in the end - something few people can do. Actually, on p.512, Iris specifically states "Laura didn't write a word of it. But you must have known...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

Hi StillIlearn. I wonder if anyone else is going to post on this forum - or will it die the death of Small Island, which deserved more discussion than it got. But I'll keep plugging. (I'm still hoping someone will provide some more insight on my earlier question about Laura - but there are...

Suggestions: April 2006 Book of the Month

I, Claudius This is a wonderful book and it has been many years since I read it. I agree with Pontalba - anyone who reads I, Claudius will probably want to read the sequel anyway.

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I just finished The Blind Assassin, and found it just as wonderful the second time around. Since I’m hopping in a little late I’ll begin by responding to previous posts, which seem to have focused on Iris, and the relevance of clothing to the book. I actually liked Iris, and think Ell’s...

    Margaret Atwood: The Blind Assassin

I'm also re-reading this - it has been a good five years or more for me since I read it - and I have to admit it is like reading it for the first time because I forgot so much! It makes me think that I should re-read really good books more often than I do. I agree that the structure and...

    Michael Bailey: Palindrome Hannah

Sure. I think it simply relates to that human urge some of us have to always be nice. It doesn't seem very nice to not like what another person has done. However well intended, criticism hurts. I knew Michael wouldn't latch out - judging from his reactions to some of the other posts -...

    Michael Bailey: Palindrome Hannah

Yes, I did indeed like the cover art - and I suspect that you also have a very well constructed plot.

    Michael Bailey: Palindrome Hannah

First of all, I’m uneasy about discussing a book with the author in the forum. Knowing this, I wish I could say that I really liked the book. I can’t say that. :o I’m only posting since I bought the book in order to take part in a discussion, and now I will put in my two cents worth...

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

Hi Pontalba! I had to play with this for awhile before I figured it out. Monkeycatcher put the *'s in so that the sample spoiler wouldn't turn into another spoiler. So leave the *s out of the actual spoiler. Also put a backslash before the second spoiler. (Now I'm not sure - it's either a...

Spoilers I don't mind using the tags. :)

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

Spoilers How funny all of this is turning out to be! :) We're talking about spoilers more than we are the book. And in that vein - I kind of agree that the blackouts are pretty unsightly - but as a newcomer I'm willing to go along with whatever is conventional for the book discussions. I...

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

Celia I just went back and reread the passage where Hortense . (You might well ask how a person could forget a thing like that so soon after finishing the book - forgive me, I'm old.)

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

Hortense and Celia Long spoiler ahead.

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

Thanks MonkeyCatcher Okay, I'm going to try this first. . And I can see by my preview message that I've got it. Thank-you! How liberating!

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

A great book I finished this book late Sunday evening and have been thinking of ways I could add to the discussion - or get one started. I've also been concerned about spoilers and will try not to include any here. The four characters were a great study in contrasts and so real. I think...

    Andrea Levy: Small Island

I love this book I'm a new member to Book Forum and have just passed the midway point on Small Island. It is absolutely marvelous! I haven't read all of the posts yet, and will do so when I finish the book - which will probably be all too soon. I'm sure I'll miss reading this when I'm finished.
