Nobel literature chief: US writing too 'insular'

I think that Americans in general are unaware of non-American authors, unless their books are somehow tied to movies or TV specials or whatever Oprah has picked, and even then they are largely popular novels. Even books that take place in somewhere else in the world are usually made into movies...

The first sentence in the book you're reading

Each player understood the obstacles to winning the Stanley Cup that season, 1967, and some felt the undeniable decay that was already eating at the foundation of their team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. -- '67: the Maple Leafs, their sensational victory, and the end of an empire by Damien Cox &...

What Do You Want to Read Next?

So many books, so little time. I would like to read Les Miserables (unabridged) and The Count of Monte Cristo (unabridged), but there are so many that I want to read that I probably couldn't list them all here. And my list would change from time to time.

How many books have you read since...

16; I was really busy with work at one point and I haven't had the motivation to do much reading this year, so far. Hopefully things will pick up soon :)

    Fiction by "Obscure" Canadian Authors

Alice Munro is an excellent writer. She specializes in short stories and one of them has been made into a film (Away From Her). The story I read was "The love of a good woman"; excellent story. Also you may want to read Jane Urquhart; she mainly writes historical fiction. She wrote an...

Books you read because of B&R

Movies you saw, but never knew it was made from a book..

There were a few movies that I didn't realize were books also. A couple of them include the movie There Will be Blood, A River Runs Through It, Legends of the Fall, etc.

    Libraries vs book stores

Because sometimes a library may not have the book that you want to read. I have been trying to see if my local library system has "Revolutionary Road" by Robert Yates and they don't. So this means that I have to either purchase a copy myself or find another library system that does have have a...

    Libraries vs book stores

Because people like to have it when they want it instead of waiting for a particular book.

When your reading time is interrupted-what do you do?

I try to go back to the beginning of the chapter or finish the chapter as I quickly can and let them know that I'll be right there. Sometimes I just leave the book upside down (if its my own) or put a book mark in it (usually a library book) and hopefully I remember what happened before I...
