    Stephen King

From a Buick 8 is wonderful. Like The Body/Stand By Me, it captures the feeling of growing up perfectly, but this time reversed. Loads of people don't like it, and I dispair of that. I honestly can't see how that's possible. It's certainly his most mature novel, the characters are completely...

It sounds to me like a lot of people here are feeling threatened...

Mark Z. Danielewski: House Of Leaves

It's wonderful in that it's so rich - It feels like so much more than a story in a book. You could spend forever looking up the themes and references and just go off on these wonderful tangents, all because of a book. I'm too tried to word it properly now, but I find it sad that people couldn't...

The horrors of the real world...

Have you been following the story? The girl is a victim of AIDS, and it seems that she knew this. There are also reports that she enticed several boys into oral sex. All is not as it seems:confused:

    Word count - anybody published?

This is all very true. I think 'shoehorning' was probably too much of a throw-away term - I introduced plenty of characters fairly early on, but left them behind as the story focused on other things. I tied them up with writing that is probably a little too convenient. I reckon I could open one...

    Word count - anybody published?

Yo, although I wrote the novel itself in 2 weeks, I consider that as 10% of the work being done - I'm at my best during the editing phase. That's why I was so quick with the first draft - which, for me, is basically a list of cool ideas and characters linked together with unconvincing dialogue...

    Word count - anybody published?

Hello - I've nearly finished my first ever BIG story  It's around 40 grand in length, but I've heard that publishers usually go for 75+ from unpublished authors - should I be shoehorning a sub-plot in here? I don't mind doing it, and reckon I could pull it off without it being obvious, but...

    Umberto Eco: Foucault's Pendulum

Oh totally. I don't hold it against him - it's what makes his books so unique, as well. But it would be great if we got something like Name of the Rose again, which was just so full of great ideas and characters. Sometimes Foucault's Pendulum got a little bogged down with its own ambition -...

    Why is it?

'Cos you're not reading boring books?:p

    Stephen King

If you look for that in your fiction then I feel sorry for you. Me, I like a good story starring characters who I root for. Stephen King delivers.

    Umberto Eco: Foucault's Pendulum

It's a beautiful book. Some passages read as if they were written by some divine hand. I can't remember specifics as it's been a while, but one about two Italian generals from opposing milita sides meeting and their mutal respect - that's the most moved I've been by a book, ever. It's not...

    Writing traditions/rules?

Really? I can't write at all at night. It has to be during the morning or afternoon, which makes life difficult. Doesn't stop me from trying at night though...

    Writing traditions/rules?

I'm just wondering about writing traditions. This may have been asked before, but you'll have to forgive me as I'm going to write mine down anyway. The reason for this? None, I just want to compare... 1, Some people say they can't write with music, others say they can't write in silence. I...
