    Richard Bachman: Blaze

Hi newer stuff is nowhere near as good as his older books, but IDK... I have a real affinity to King because he introduced me to reading, I think. My first "adult novel" was Cujo, which I read at 11, and it scared the living crap out of me. It also made me hungry to read more, so I feel like I...

what are the saddest movies you've seen.

Peronel, looks like you and I have very similar tastes overall. I own The Color Purple, have seen it about 600 times, and I still cry every single time I watch it, despite the fact that I know exactly what is going to happen. It's one of my favorite movies, even though it is so sad. I hardly...

    post embarassing confessions

Listen, buddy- you can't start a thread asking for embarrassing confessions and then mock and/ or insult people who do as you ask. Bad form. *shakes finger in a stern manner* No shame there; I openly enjoy them and I'm over 30. LOL. OK, now that I think about it, that (^) is slightly...

    March Reads

Everything is Illuminated, by Jonathan Safran Foer- Not as good as his other book The Last King of Scotland by Giles Foden- Completely different from the movie, and I hated the main character. More on this to come. The Good Life by Jay McInerney- Not as good as his other work Poppy...

    post embarassing confessions

I'm a smoker and I have no desire nor intention to quit, even though I know it is slowly killing me.

    Your country's writers.

I'm an American, but I live in Belgium. From what I understand, Belgium has produced some fine writers, but unfortunately I only know one: Amélie Nothomb. I read one of her books, Fear and Trembling, which was a semi-autobiographical short novel about a Belgian girl working in Japan for one year...

    Stephen King/Peter Straub: The Talisman

You know, while I've read all of King's books, I've never read any other Peter Straub. Is he any good?

    Stephen King/Peter Straub: The Talisman

I luuurve this book; it's my favorite Stephen King book, and probably my favorite fantasy book of all time. Of course some of the plot is a bit predictable, but I love the heroes - Wolf especially is an incredible character, and he made me cry a bit. It is full of suspense, and I absolutely...

Hmm, good thread. Mine (drumroll, please!) In no particular order: Arrested Development *sobs with Peronel* NewsRadio Six Feet Under The Sopranos Sex and the City (HBO rules) The Cosby Show Seinfeld The Real World (even though it's getting suckier and suckier, this is my guilty little...

My introductory greeting and my first question for anyone who can help me

I think that's the FBI at your door.... :P

    Your Name Please

I was (fittingly, I suppose, considering where I am writing this) named after a book, "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm."

Zoë Heller: What Was She Thinking: Notes on a Scandal

I've noticed that these BOTM "discussions" never really go anywhere. I was wondering: do you think it would be helpful to post a couple of questions at the beginning of the thread pertaining to the book in order to get the conversation rolling? Just a thought...

    The Departed

I think he tried, but he just couldn't pull it off... and thank you! Because his accent really annoyed me, too. :) Although I really liked this movie, I still say it's his 3rd best gangster movie. Goodfellas was miles better than this one, IMO, as was Casino.

    Yann Martel: Life of Pi

One word: Yes. The ending really makes you look at the book in a completely different light; you may decide you don't like the way it ends (I didn't!), but it is definitely interesting.

    Ahoy, pirates!

I think I've only ever read one pirate book, and that was Treasure Island. I loved that book as a kid.

Recommendations for a good crime novel?

Hitcher- that is excellent news; I'm so happy you liked it!! I think Devil in a Blue Dress is one of the best in the series, so you started off with a good one. :)

Know of any cutting-edge and shocking NEW writers?

Mo Hayder is definitely shocking- her writing is shocking more in a gory, violent way, rather than a weird, twisted way, though. But I think that one Hayder book in particular, The Devil of Nanking, might be right up your alley:

Most loved "classic" novel you've read

And I totally agree with you, SFG... lol. The Grapes of Wrath is one of my favorite books of all time. The characters were well-shaped and distinct, and I also found the topic really interesting. It was depressing to see them struggle, but their determination to stay together and keep family...
