Alexandre Dumas: The Count Of Monte Cristo

Ahh a thread on Le Comte de Monte Cristo!! *****SPOILERS***** One of my favorite novels, and imo Dumas greatest work. where to begin... i fell in love with the brooding, byronic count. This character has so many layers, complex, one of the greatest characters ever written (also imo). From...

    Salman Rushdie

Thanks for refererence, I didn't know that genre existed but it seems that all my favorite stories are magic realism ones =0 & now that you mention it, I can't help but notice his lang/word tricks and its distracting me from the story!!! T-T

    Magic Realism

hmm i going to get away from south america and jump to japan and H.Murakami... In particular; A wild sheep chase, Dance Dance Dance, and Hard Boiled wonderland and the end of the world.
  10. Laughingman

    Salman Rushdie

Currently reading midnights children. Very quirky sense of humor, makes u laugh out loud at times.. I'm not sure if you'll agree but it reminds me of G.G Marquez's A 1000 years of solitude.

Will Robert Jordan Die before he finished wheel of time series?

just to clarify... he's not recovering from an illness or anything like that, just that it'd be gay if he died without finishing the series
  12. Laughingman

The last sentence in the book you're currently reading.

'My dearest,' said Valentine, 'has the count not just told us that all human wisdom was contained in these two words - "wait" and "hope"?' Alexandre Dumas - The Count of Monte Cristo P.S props to SFG75 from whom i blatently plagiarized this idea

    Worst/Most Overrated books

Tolstoy-War and Peace(finished) <- this took me over a year.. Tolstoy-Anna Karenina (attempted and failed)<- i;ve given up on this one and I've skipped most of the thread so I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it but I HAVE to say; J.K Rowling - the entire harry potter series... what is all...

Most loved "classic" novel you've read

Hmm if i could, i'd divide classics into classicclassics and modern classics. Then Les Miserables(a close second;crime and punishment) and the modern classic would be Catch-22 hands down.
  15. Laughingman

    Joseph Heller: Catch 22

Favorite book of all time. I've always had a strange, somewhat sick affinity with black humor and Heller is the master. I actual had to run out of a library, because i was too embarrassed that I was laughing so much and so loud... it starts black but extremely funny, and ends extremely black...
  16. Laughingman

Haruki Murakami: Kafka On The Shore

hmm i think its more like a criticism of the capitalism that has ocurred in japan. many of his works portray the authors disallusionment with capitalist society, especially at the japanese peoples calm intergration into the capitalist system after the massive student demonstration of the 70's(or...
  17. Laughingman

Milan Kundera: The Unbearable Lightness Of Being

I;ve read it twice and was moved both times, just the portrayal of the pain, and suffering that comes with living, and to some extent an acceptance of it...
  18. Laughingman

Gabriel García Márquez: Love In The Time Of Cholera

I would say ariza developes a monomania, an obession/fixation on Daza caused by their rather brief encounters... but that seems obvious, so im pretty sure i'm not answering your question properly, a little more specific please?
  19. Laughingman

Will Robert Jordan Die before he finished wheel of time series?

Is it just me or does it seem that R.jordan has waffled for about 3 books, and has decided that enough is enough, that he should stop introducing new prophecies and get the damn series finished before he croaks... If he dies now...well im going to be in some serious need of some closure...
