Bill Bryson is one of my favourite authors. I love his ability to laugh at himself. He sets himself up as a bumbling innocent who keeps stumbling into the unlikeliest of situations.
I enjoyed his memoir - The Life and Times of the Thunderbolt Kid - because it gave me the opportunity to learn more about the parents he refers to so lovingly in some of his books. Even when he describes their foibles, I can feel how much he loves and respects them.
