Oh boy. I just read a review of this brilliant book The Man Who Stared At Goats by journalist Jon Ronson. He reports on the many strange techniques--such as superhuman psychic powers--that the US military is cultivating in "secret" installations and traces some of these practices to Guantanamo Bay and Iraq. It looks fascinating.
Here's a snippet of the review from the NY Times yesterday:
"For instance, he describes the effort to deploy a Moscow scientist who had previously sent subliminal messages to Red Army troops ("Do not get drunk before battle") in the Branch Davidian standoff. This scientist didn't work out because he was unwilling to transmit words spoken by Charlton Heston as a bogus voice of God."
