I remember reading a book about a couple who had a child who went missing, or was murdered. The boy's mother became very cold, causing the father to have an affair with possibly a neighbour(?).
The father, who I think was a children's illustrator, moved to the States. He returned some years laters, and his ex wife grudgingly let him stay at her house. What happened to the boy is revealed (I think he was killed by the neighbour who was baby sitting).
There is also an autistic child involved...
