Wasn't there a book about how a Roman legionnaire, required to march 20 miles in a day with his weight on his back, was stronger than a modern marathon runner?

It sounds like something that would be more of a factoid in a larger text than a book dedicated to the subject. I'd suggest looking at either Horrible Histories Rome or an Osprey book on Romans and see if it is in there.
